My SONY Home Theater Model HT-6600DP unit was working fine and then about tow years after...present, my sub woofer is sounding distorted. Why is this happening? Please help me as I often watch my home...

Is it so even at lower volumes?

Are you sure it's the sub distorting and not the front or center speakers?

If you designate them incorrectly as Large (which tells the receiver they CAN effectively produce bass frequencies) they will probably distort in the presence of low frequencies.

Hercules XPS 210 sub problem. distorted sound

I think you've just answered your own question. It sounds as if you've coned the sub woofer. Meaning you've fractured the bond between the edge of the speaker body with the speaker cone. Or overheated the voice coil and it's distorted and not getting free movement. Excuse the Pun but it "sounds" like you need a new speaker as a replacement. If it's a particularly expensive speaker it can be reconed. A check of the Net for someone close to you will find a company who recones them. If it's a cheaper one then a replacement would be in order.

How do i know if my sub is blown?

The sound (if it makes any) will be distorted and garbled. Keep in mind that subs require amplification. If you are testing the sub without an amplifier you may or may not hear distortion because the radio by its self can't make the sub perform properly, if it has to low of voltage it may crackle because its not recieving a strong enough signal, if it is blown it may not crackle for the same reason

Sub distortion

The first thing you can check is the actual movement of the sub you think is broken. Is it stiff, hard to move, or rough. Any of those things could indicate a problem with the voice coil. The next step will require a voltmeter to read the resistance of the sub in question. First check the good sub and see if it matches the other. I'm thinking it probably won't again indicating a problem with a voice coil. If everything checks out fine you can look for obstructions in the sub box that would impede the subs movement. Or even if the enclosure is a lot smaller on that side it could cause problems. Still nothing? Swap the speaker leads (left to right) at the amp, did the distortion change to the other sub? If that happens - start checking RCA cables, head units, and amplifiers. Happy hunting!

Install subs on back doors on a 95 suburban

Install Dynamat. That should stop the rattling and distortion. the distortion is from the door vibrating the sound waves and messing the sound molecules up before they reach your ears. stopping the vibration should stop the distortion.

Auto Sub woofer

There are several causes of distortion in an audio setup.

1) Speaker is unable to handle the frequency that it's being fed
2) The volume is too high for the speaker to handle
3) The amp can't provide enough power to drive the speaker adequately.

Either way distortion is BAD & best to be avoided unless you want an excuse to buy a new set of speakers :P

Alpine pdx 1.1000 amp

These subs are dual voice coil I'm sure...make sure they are putting a 2 ohm load on the amp total, and also set your gain and frequency setting right. Set the frequency around 85 or 90, make sure the lo pass filter is on. Turn the gain ALL the way down and turn your stereo to the point right before your speakers distort....then slowly increase the gain until the subs are playing at full volume. This should not even be close to all the way up, and the subs should sound accurate and bold. Turning them past this point will cause distortion, in which case you should back off the gain a bit. Distortion causes power to cycle through the amp very rapidly and can cause blown subs and blown fuses. If you do not know how to wire both subs for a combined load of 2 ohms, please let me know what type of subs you have.
