There is also a sleep mode on the newer lg models that needs to be changed from the preset ,from the settings mode.

Kindly do not keep attempting to turn it on, as you are likely to spoil some other boards/parts/components of the TV. Look for any loose contacts in power out let, RC jack, cable and socket. In order to ensure, it is not caused by the input device, connect a DVD player
and see. Switch off TV, switch off power, remove plug and wait for 48 hours and retry.
If problem persists, I suggest it is better to refer it to a qualified service technician, since the back cover has to be opened for investigation/rectification.

SOURCE: I have a LG 42LD 550 just got it, couple day, it

Yes its faulty. This is not me being funny. The 42" TV has had many faults and weas under recall. LG does not mean good life. It means lotta garbage. If this is new take it back and have it replaced. Preferbaly with a different brand. If it was second hand it has to have minimum guarantee and be covered up to 7 days for colling off and trial period.

Get it back fast, the repair cost is sky high ( $600)

SOURCE: 42 LG plasma no picture but sound. found internal

Sounds like it started "Protection Mode" because of a failed electronic part inside the TV. When this happens, the TV will keep turning itself OFF or will not turn ON at all. This keeps the other parts inside from being damaged. Most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. The common part to go bad for flat panel screens circuit board that powers the screen itself. Most manufactures call it a Backlight Inverter Board.
But, I can't say what is 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet. I can only make guesses with the symptom.

You have a few choices:

1. Best thing to do, if you can find and purchase a Service Manual over the internet; It will help you diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, schematics, test points, and part# lists.Usually, cost under $20. Its the best repair guide material for fixing TVs. And most cases the new part cost less than $15 by searching on the internet with the part number.

2. Pay a TV shop to do the repairs. It maybe costly, but get an estimate of how much they will charge. That way you can decide if it worth repairing or replacing the whole TV.

I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.

This isn't an easy fix, it sounds like your power supply board is bad or there is a main board problem. I'd suspect a faulty power supply capacitor or heatsink missing, but you have to bring it in to a tech to know for sure.

This is because the power switch operated the socket that your TV is plugged into. Unplug it and plug it in another socket that is not operated by a switch. Appliances should not be plugged into a socket operated by a switch because of the inconsistency of power to the socket. Lights are about the only thing that should be plugged in.

My tv will turn on by itself also once on keeps going thru the channels i tried unpluging and this did not work

You probably have defective switches on the side of the television. Try leaving the switches disconnected (unplug the connector on the switch board) for a few days and see if the defect goes away. If it does, then order a new switch board.
