Clean light keeps blinking and I can't start a new cycle

The dishwasher is a Kenmore Ultra Wash Quiet guard 3 (white) I started, thought it washed and completed a the cycle but when I went to get the dishes out. The dished had not been washed and the light on the panel was blinking clean. I am not sure if someone had opened it to put something in it and didn't close it all the way or what. I tried canceling it and such and nothing would work and clean light would continue to blink. I even tried shutting of the breaker for an extended period of time but the clean button still bllinks.

I have the following option buttons:

HI Temp Wash - Heated Dry - Delay Hour

and of course the Cancel and Start buttons

I have only owned this Kenmore Elite Ultra Wash for 1 week and had these same issues. I googled and found this site...and after reading the solutions my blood pressure is back to normal. BUT, I used ALL the sequences that are suggested. It seemed that each sequence fixed something different for me. So, now my dishwasher is running and cleaning AGAIN! Try All of the suggested sequences. Instead of air dry I just pressed my heated dry. Now for the leaking water out of the bottom center...

    THIS SITE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

I have the same problem and it seems the same model as puppa, blinking clean light and the only button that works is the cancel/drain button but there is obviously nothing to drain-please help as I HATE to do dishes by hand! Thanx

I have learned the buttons that re-set it all. The only way I can get it through a whole cylce is to put it on normal wash and with no heat... Do I need a new element?

We have a Kenmore 24" built in dishwasher. We ran a load as usual, then it started blinking the green "Clean" light, and wouldn't run.
I followed the button sequence suggested, and it works just fine.

Clean light is blinking green and cannot start dishwasher. It is Kenmore Quiet Guard3

  • ectax Dec 04, 2008

I had the same problem. The key here is after pushing the appropriate buttons (in my case, hi-temp, heated dry, several times) and all the lights come on, WAIT and let it do it's diagnostic thing. I think mine is now fixed. A repair person was going to charge me almost $400 to replace the heater, thermostat and control panel! Why doesn't the user's manual tell the consumer to try this?

Puppa, clear the fault by pressing the keys in this order: high temp scrb--air dry--high temp scrub--air dry. Or, depending on your model..Sani rinse--air dry--sani rinse--air dry. The dishwasher will enter the service mode. Let it do it's thing or advance it through it by pressing the start key. The fault came from the board not sensing a rise in the water temp. Make sure to run the hot water before starting the dishwasher. The heating element runs through the nuetral side of the door switch so make sure the d/w is level and the door switches are all making. The element itself could be at fault. Catriver...post back

Puppa, then the key dance will be high temp wash-heated dry-high temp wash-heated dry. Cativer..post back

  • Anonymous Apr 01, 2007

Right on, if it keeps happening, it could be the heater. Just make sure to run the hot water before starting the dishwasher. Catriver.

Okay, on my D/W it was Hi temp/Normal, Hi temp/Normal. I turned up the temp on my hot water tank and that worked for about 6 months or so. Then it got louder and louder and I’m back to the green blinking light. Now it fills, Goes through some of its cycles, I hear a loud popping sound, and then it drains. I think the heating element or motor is gone, Any suggestion??

I had the same problem: a blinking "Clean" light on a Kenmore dishwasher. Actually it would blink 7 times, then pause and repeat. Your trick to put the machine in maintenance mode worked!! The sequence I used was: Hi Temp Wash, Heated Dry; Hi Temp Wash, Heated Dry. It did as you said, cycled through and did its thing for about 4 minutes or so, then finally cleared the blinking green light. It is running now. Thanks catriver!! bsharpandc

We tried this and the dishwasher starts running again, but stops before it reaches the heat-dry cycle. Initially we were told to press "normal wash - heated dry " twice....but after reading the above we tried "hi temp wash - heated dry" which seemed to have the same effect. What happens is this: all the lights go on for a few seconds, then it starts into the wash cycle but stops at the heat-dry cycle. Any ideas?

I did the same thing - hi temp wash, heated dry, hi temp wash, heated dry. It worked well - thanks.

SOURCE: Smelly dishes from Kenmore Ultra Wash

If you post the model number of your dishwasher plus its approximate age (in years) I can help more.

But the most common cause is a weakening pump motor. On many dishwashers, the wash pump motor is also the drain motor. Replacing that motor / pump assembly will solve the problem. While you are replacing the pump, check the heating element to confirm that it is not shorted out or broken.

For now, add a cap full of bleach to the water _after_ the initial dishwasher fill cycle ends and the wash cycle begins. White vinegar would also work, but this will not fix your problem.

Good Luck!

SOURCE: Clean light keeps blinking and I can't start a new cycle

That is a comon problem with that model. It is not sensing a temperature change in the water.

Push i believe it is heated dry and sani rinse going back and fourth between the two to clear the code and see if you can get it to complete a cycle. If it doesnt call sears and schedule service there is a service flash repair that should not cost you anything to repair the unit.

Kenmore dishwasher ultra was quiet guard 3 model 56516012403 control panel will not activate red lights blinking on normal wash and cancel drain. did the hold the heat dry button then the normal wash...

that would be model # 66516012403 correct??
you may have inadvertently set the lock on function..
check this out from your manual...

Lock On
Use the Lock On to prevent unintended use of the dishwasher
between cycles. You can also use the lock feature to prevent
unintended cycle or option changes during a cycle.
When LOCK ON is lit, all buttons are disabled.
NOTE: The dishwasher door can be opened while the controls
are locked. However, the lock must be turned off and the Start/
Resume button pressed to resume the cycle.
To turn on the Lock
Press and hold HEATED DRY for 4 seconds. LOCK ON glows.
If you press any pad while your dishwasher is locked, the light
flashes 3 times.
NOTE: If the Heated Dry option is selected, the light will
temporarily turn off until Lock On glows.
To turn off the Lock
Press and hold HEATED DRY for 4 seconds. The light turns off.

hope this helps,
best of luck,

Loud Buzzing Sound from Dishwasher

have you ever seen green led "Clean" light flashing? before or about the same time the buzzing sound started? and if so that would indicate that the control senses a fault in the temperature rise during the heating cycle and that the electronic control could be reset by initiating a service diagnostic cycle.(which is what you were trying to do) pls reread your manual there are times during that sequence that some buttons have to be pushed at the same time and within a certain amount of time..possible that your machine also has a bad timer which would give you a buzzing noise..if thats the case I would recommend replacing the cpu or control board..or the machin all together..The Kenmore Ultra Wash Quiet Guard name is sears but whirpool has the contract to produce all "kenmore products.hope that helps.

Kenmore ultra wash quiet guard 3 dishwasher problem

call sears, 1-800-4MY-HOME. They have a trouble-shooting department that will get rid of this problem. It is caused by water temperature being wrong at the start of the cycle.... blah, blah, blah. The representative will tell you to push a certain set of buttons in a certain order and that unlocks the dishwasher.

Sorry I don't know the sequence
