The washer was in spin cycle when I noticed the loud thumping...dont know how it was working during regular wash cycle.
SOURCE: loud noise during spin cycle
Spin bearing is rusted from a water leak under the tub. Forget it, buy another brand.

The belt is slipping and needs replaced.

SOURCE: Washer won't agitate or spin out.
Well it is ethier Belt, Cluch ,motor ,Or transmission. But it does sound like your transmission . The loud clunk is the brake in the gear case ( Trans.). It might have broken off.
SOURCE: Today, my washing machine started
if the noise is in the drum the usual culprit is a rogue Bra underwire. look for it poking through any of the holes in the drum and pull it back if you can, otherwise it can be retrived through the heater location (requires some emgineering skill to remove and replace heater). if the noise is from the motor it will be a segment broken away from the armature . this requires a new motor.
