The weird thing is that I can receive text messages from my family members on the same Verizon phone plan as me, but not from anyone else. I asked Verizon for help and they "reset" something and sent successful text texts. Makes me think this is a Verizon problem. BTW, I don't use email at all on my phone. Any thoughts?

I had this same problem and called Motorola for support. The solution is to clear text/mms message inbox and outbox. The default setting on my phone was to never clear the inbox but I changed that to remove messages when they are 10 days old, I have not experienced the problem since.

The phone allocates a certain amount of storage for messages on a whole. Even though there may still show space available for text messages, you have hit an invisible "limit" and the phone is now defaulting to MMS messages because there is "room" there. Delete a fair amount of messages and you should be able to start sending regular text's again.
