Canon power shot sx 100 reads card locked

I put in my memory card and camera read card locked!

Thanks, but I did check that it is in the unlocked position. I put in a new card and it reads the same. Wondering if it is something wrong with the the camera itself.

When I turn on my Canon Power Shot A490, the words "memory card locked" come up on the screen. I can not take a photo. I went through the menu options, but nothing helped.

SD Memory cards have a tiny switch on the edge that marks the memory card as read only and prevents any writes. If you get the message "Card locked!" when you turn the camera on then turn the camera off, eject the SD card. With the card facing you (metal contacts facing away) the switch is on the left hand edge, slide towards the top of the card to make the card read/write again.

Sounds like the tiny switch inside the camera is broken. If its still under warranty then you should send it back to be replaced/repaired.

If you are no longer under warranty then you can still get around the read only problem by installed something called CHDK onto the SD card. Its a little involved, but lifehacker have a good walkthrough here:

    http://lifehacker.com/387380/turn-your-p...

You might want to get a geeky friend to help you out if you get stuck. CHDK ignores the "read only" state of the SD card, so even though you still get the "Card locked!" message you will be able to take photos -- and of course all of the lovely extra stuff that CHDK provides...!

I had the same problem with my SX 100, and with a knife I gently bent in the metal tab that acts as the switch to read your card's "locked" status.  At first I tried to pull the tab out (into the memory card slot) more and that didn't help, so when I pushed the tab in (out of the way of the memory card slot) it did the trick.  I probably won't be able to use the "read only" feature on memory cards now, but I didn't use it anyway!  Now my camera works fine and can write to the SD card again!

We had this happen to us as well. It happened after we were trying out a new Pandigital digital frame. It seems that for some odd reason when you insert the card into the slot the frame pushes the card lock into the locked position. I'm not sure why this is necessary, since you can't write to the card or delete or rotate pictures while it's in the frame. We initally panicked since we had two cards and both were coming up Card Locked!. At first we thought the camera was broken and then when we realized both had been used in the frame we thought for sure the frame had corrupted the cards. Until we vistited this site we hadn't realized there was a lock on the cards. So thanks for the info.

I got cannon power shot sx130 is it reads memory card error the memory card is not locked but the eject button is not working how to fix this problem. thanks

Try to switch off the Camera and restart it gain. Again, Sometimes, its due to some auto-run software running in the card which prevents that from ejection. You can try to even format the card in the camera itself. That may work also.

As a last resort, check up your camera and get that memory card removed out of your Camera.

Memory card locked

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

My canon power shot SD990is just started reading when I go and turn on it says card lock. How can I get it to work correct without those words coming up

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
