The date and time setting resets itself to 1.1.01 occasionally. Other user settings remain stored. I understand this should only happen if batteries are removed longer than 1 hour. I use the camera daily and batteries are replaced regularly. They sometimes are low power, but, never unusable level. Wondering if there is an internal memory cell going bad.
There is a cmos battery (or a memory battery) on the main circuit that like any battery wears out eventually. If you are familiar with repairing electronic circuits you can get the part from Olympus. There is no part number just "memory battery for C-740" will suffice. Your other two choices are to take the camera to a shop where they can do the kob for you. Don't let them sell you a complete new board, you don't need one. Not for this problem anyway. Or you can ignore the problem and reset the camera (or not)each time you change batteries.

DATE/TIME
OKOK:At the time of purchase and after leaving the camera for a
long period with the batteries removed, settings such as the
date and time are cleared. Once the AC power adapter has
been connected or the batteries have been installed for 2
hours or more, the camera settings will be retained for
roughly 6 hours even if both sources of power are removed.
