If the heater fails to ignite after three attempts, the heater will automatically go into Lock Out. This is a safety feature on the heater.

Things for you to look at to see what is causing the problem are the display panel and diagnostic lights. When you turn on the heater, is it reading the correct water temp? If not, the Thermister has gone bad and will need to be replaced. When you try to start the heater, is there an Error Code displayed? Which of the Service Lights are coming on when the heater will not light? If it is the Serivce System, that is usually low flow of water. You may have a dirty filter, skimmer or pump basket full of debris, or a valve not completely open.

If the Service System light is the one coming on, then you will need to take off the top two halves of the heater and turn over the Display Panel. There are diagnostic lights on the back side of the panel. There may be a red light next to any of the following:

AGS, AFS, SFS, HLS, PS or THERMISTOR

If there is a red light next to one of these, then that is what has malfunctioned. If you need an Owner's Manual for the heater, you can find one online at the following link:

SOURCE: I'm thinking of buying a Lochinvar Energyrite

My boss once asked me if I could work on a Lochinvar. I told him I could pronounce it.
Chevy is a car and so is Mercedes Benz. Lochinvar is the same kind of German engineering. Quality product. Tough to find people qualified to work on one and pricey at that. Great heaters though. As far as the model I have only worked on the big ones.(commercial) I have found if you work on them one time they stay fixed.

It is a gas appliance and can only be worked on by a registered gas technician. Call a local company.

FP Code

FP - The burner is not running 2 minutes after the start of the call for heat. Check ignition control codes.

Troubleshooting blink codes

There is actually a legend on the ignition control module that you see flashing. This is a very basic troubleshooting code, usually it blinks 3 times, meaning ignition lockout (heater tried to fire unsuccessfully 3 times)

Hello, I have a Lochinvar ern 252, it was working great last season and was winterized properly... I just open the pool and now it is reading lockout ignition failure.... I can smell gas when it goes into...

two things, is it a spark igniter or hot surface?
if spark igniter is working then the pilot tube or fuel path to the igniter is plugged, a lot of times small spiders or insects will winter over in these tubes, build a small web or cocoon that restricts gas flow to the igniter. OR hot surface igniter not hot enough and will not lite the gas. can be tested with an amp probe or just replaced .

Lochinvar model ER152. The control module keeps bouncing from "Pool mode prepurge" to "pool mode ignition". I hear a click like it's trying to star up then it repeats itself. The spark...

This sounds like a problem with the gas supply. It could have a clogged orifice causing the problem. Make sure the gas is turned on and the gas valve in the heater is turned on. Pull the gas orifices and make sure there are no spider webs in them.
