Have a Sta rite pump with AO Smith 2hp motor#77-177897-22. Extremely loud hard start, Change 30 MF capicitor...no change!! It will try and start 2 to 3 times tripping thermal overload and then on the 3rd or 4th attempt it starts. Motor is running with mild to mod noise level. It is in an enclosed pool equipment room and does not get wet.

Bearings are seizing and not spinning freely. That is common when a shaft seal starts to leak & goes uncorrected.

The sound you are hearing are the failing bearings. This will also create the symptoms you described.

Replace the bearings & you will have the problem corrected.

There are two of them: front and rear - both are different sizes. They will look similar to this:

Want to replace my AO Smith Mod C48K2PA105C5 pool pump with a better pump. What's a step up?

i recommend the sta rite dura glass . it's the best pump out there! you will need to plumb it in . but it's worth it ... it's the only pump i sell .. remember to prime the pump after any pump repair + never starve the pump for water . find a used pump from your local pool pump motor repair guy and ask him how 2 take better care of your pump.. he can save you thousands of dollhair$ over the years .. jay pump guy longwood Florida

I just installed a 2 hp AO Smith for a customer, 2 days days later one of the return lines broke and sprayed water everywhere. When I got there and fixed the line and tried to start the motor it would only...

You should try to dry the motor out and not run it until it does. You can use a hair dryer, etc. or just wait. You might even be able to find a spray that is made just for absorbing water under these circumstances at a motor rebuilder. Once it dries, it may work fine.

Replaced ao smith mtr with ge marathon, now have leak?from bottom

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Check the volute o-ring for damage. It sometimes moves as you re-tighten the band around the pump halves and gets pinched. If it was, replace it. You may also need to replace the pump seal and insert if the pump is old enough to have had one. Whenever you change a motor you should also replace the seal.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Hi,

It will be better to service the machine the machine than to change the bearing.
Servicing the machine will stop the high pitch sound and makes it work better and also reduce your cost.

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

Sta Right model P2RASF-182L (RPM 3450) sounds like the bearings are gone...turns on, but is very loud and gets very hot.  The water is not circulating either.

If the noise you are hearing is like a grinding, then the bearings are gone. Sta-Rite does not make the motors for their pumps, either AO Smith, or Centurian, makes them, so they recommend that you replace the motor with a new one. You can try a small motor repair shop in your area.

If it is an AO Smith motor, you may be able to find more information at the following website:
