hey I solved it myself!!!
initially i was entering only four digits, but this time I just kept entering '0' as many times as the phone takes (which i think is six digits)....and VOILA...everything done!!!!

Remove battery and reinsert (power cycle). I know, doesn't make sense but it worked for me and others.

Julie... are you following all the steps. generally it will ask you to confirm you want to delete the contact.
first of course go to your contact list.... locate the contact you wish to delete.... select options for that contact then select delete.... confirm it and it should be gone
