What do you mean by adaptor?! You will need to by a hotshoe adaptor with a hole that talkes the old style cable plug from your Metz lead and away you go! Try jessops. (As long as you have the lead from your Metz!?

Contact polarity

Hi elepant,

I haven't seen a 202, but if it's the same as the later 45 series, then looking into the bottom of the flash, the top pin at the round end is positive, the left one half way down is the negative for 7.2V NiCDs and the bottom right one, lowest down in the square corner, is the negative for 9V alkaline batteries. I've used NiCds and NIMH batteries with no problems, connected to the alkaline pins, it's just a tapping on the power supply transformer to compensate for the NiCDs having a lower voltage. There's also a 0.2 ohm resistor inside some of the Metz 45 models, in series with the NiCd negative line, probably to limit the initial current. I've had no problems at all over 24 years, with using NICds or NIMH on the alkaline connections, in an alkaline battery holder.

Regards,

Neil

My son is a professional photographer on board a cruise liner out in the eastern mediteranean, he bought a new Metz 45 CL4 Digital Flash with NiMh Battery (he also bought a spare battery)on the 7th May...

Being a function photographer myself, I'm sure that your son like myself always has backup equipment. He can send an email to log the problem for later warrantee repair. Metz have repairers in most major cities, but your son obviously wants to not risk having to leave port without it. It seems to me that one of the components may have failed and be causing an overheating problem. It can help to turn the flash off as much as possible while shooting, but this would be too distracting for me, and when these things have a problem, it is better not to force them to carry on. The main advantage of this powerful flash is the TTL feature. But this is only important when doing macro shots with bellows or extension tubes. For regular shooting he could use aperture priority on his camera and AUTO setting on any non TTL compatible flash. If he is really stuck, I can arrange for another 45 CL-4 unit to be couriered to him at his next port, or even at sea if it is that urgent. But the cost might not be worth it for him. Please, don't get stressed about it. I'm sure he is managing OK. In the same situation I would get by OK. Passengers often have professional eqipment, and for a seat at the Captain's table, I think one of them might be tempted to lend or sell your son a suitable unit. Also the Purser can help him out if necessary. And if he doesn't have a spare unit, he is short of something he needs to buy anyway. I always have at least two big Metz units with me. I often use the seciond one with a slave unit for better lighting effects, and in the event of one failing (It's never happened actually in over 30 years!) I carry on with one unit. Cheer up. He'll be OK.

Metz 45 CT 1

I had that same problem also, but mines was temporarly. Ik think the condensor inside the Metz has to regeneratie (recover) itself by using with a full charged fresh batteries. The high freq. sound is normal. (although not to loud) after a 5 MINUTES the orange bulb should light up. How more u used how better the start-up time. My old Metz start-up time was around 40 sec. and now ot is within 7 sec.

Can I use a 7 volt transformer for Metz 45cl-1

You will need a AC to DC transformer.
Make sure which lead or pin is positive.

between 5.0 to 9.0VDC should be ok.
