Why can't I play audio on certain avi and mkv files on Mountain Lion?

Unless I convert files to a different format I am unable to hear audio from certain avi and mkv files with Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192"). I have tried two versions of quicktime with Perian, DivX player, Submerge, iSubtitle, XBMC. If I convert them to a different format I can hear the audio but its time consumig and a pain.

No audio issue commonly is seen for the following reasons:
1. Incompatible with the current app
2. Lack of MKV codec.
3. Corrupted or damaged MKV files.
4. Conversion issue.
5. Media Player issue.

Sounds like it might be a codec that is not included in the OS or the applications you have tried. Can you try VLC player? It's one of the most versatile media players around and plays almost everything that I've come across.

SOURCE: Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192")

Without the full error code, I have to assume this error ends with "You may need to install a Directshow decoder for this audio format."
Look on this page in the left upper corner, you will see :
Moviecodec Forums/Downloads , when you put the cursor on this, another choise can be maken, then choose below in that choise : Audio Codecs, when this has been opened you have to take the first of the row ( AC3 Codec ( tag 2000/8192
Clic on this one, save it to a place ( new folder )in your "received files " and then open it( double clic )
Put it in your " program files " following the instructions. When this is done, your movie will have sound.
It works with my movie
