I have this same tv/vcr combo and when I plugged it in and tried to auto program, I too- noticed that tamper proof button. Yes, with a Universal remote (that I got from Walmart) . So I held the enter button and hit 00 at the same time. It went off and then I was able to turn the tv on and off. However, cannot seem to figure out why I cannot get all the channels when I pay for the cable.

two red lights blinking no remote
I have the same problem (however, it's unrelated to the tamper-proof button). Both the POWER & REC lights are blinking on the TV console. Sometimes the TV won't even turn on, and when it does turn on, you could hear the TV (black screen) and it turns off within seconds.
I had the same problem with my grundig/vcr and left it in to be fixed after i got sky in. They couldnt fix it and recyled my tv. I am only realising perhaps it was the remote as the power light said the same as yours aaarrrgghh!
