DONT THROW AWAY YOUR BULB JUST YET!!! IT MAY BE THE COLOR WHEEL!
I have an optoma hd70 and was having the same problems. I also tried the "dust blob" tutorial, but unfortunately it did not work for me (and I ended up getting dust on the lens I couldn't get off myself). I started searching on the net for more answers and found some information regarding the angling of the projector. Apparently, if you tilt the projector with the back raised too high, the ventilation system does not work properly and this increased amount of heat damages the color wheel inside (this causes the wheel not to spin correctly and display a flickering effect...and that's also why it works for a few minutes on start-up but then gets too hot and the wheel skips and creates the flicker).
Luckily, I have a very extended warranty and was fortunate enough to send it in and have the dust removed & color wheel repaired/replaced. Now, I've lowered the stand for the projector to not have it tilting at such a high angle and haven't had any problems yet...but it does take awhile to get effected (had mine for about 1 & 1/2 years)
I know I should have probably just sent it for repairs in the first place...but who wants to miss out on having a projector for two weeks when a tutorial says I could've fixed it in like 20 miutes?!?! Oh well. Hope this helps someone...good luck;)
Thank you oh thank you oh THANK YOU!!!!!!!! I have an Optoma EP759 PRO that is used stricktly for home theater. It is about 2 years old. I have been having flickering problems for several months now and have replaced the bulb 2x in 3 months. The 1st bulb was a genuine Optoma bulb and the 2nd was a Phillips. The flickering still continued and got progressively worse till finally the set wouldn't come on at all and if it did it would shut down after 5 mins. I was looking for a repair center on line when I came across this site. I couldn't believe that the problem could be dust as I regularly vacuum the vents. I decided to disassemble and blow out the projector with compressed air befor sending out the unit and low and behold, it works perfectly now. No more green start up screen, color is fantastic and NO MORE FLICKERING. You would not believe the amount of dust built up inside and on the 3 fan motors. It is like new once more and I have an extra bulb. Ican't believe it. Thanks again!!!!!
Ladies and Gentleman...its the frigging dust!!!!!! i sent my hd70 back they fixed it with no explanation or maintenance but ah-ha...it has to be the dust!!!!! At last one of the worlds oldest elements has proven to be a most formidable foe to halogen technology.
You might want to check this out: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=proj_2200MP&message.id=2136 i had almost identical problems with an optoma h27, took the rear panel off, removed what dust i could get to and this seems to have cleared the problem
I have a Optoma HD20 and when I turn it on the screen is green and the image is blurry and flickers.....but if I leave it on after 30 seconds a squeaking noise stops and the picture goes back to normal. Is this the color wheel, or dust?
I also have an HD20 and similar problems. I blew the dust out with an air compressor and reset the unit. That did not fix the problem. Taking advice about overheating I changed the fan setting to "high altitude" which makes the fan run faster and louder, but it has made the picture acceptable, but not as good as when it was new. Also, I only have about 600 hours of viewing time on mine over about 3 years.

My projector turns off after running for a few minutes.
I realize this is an old thread however I had the exact same issue with dust blobs on my HD70 and was unable to locate instructions or a tutorial on how to remove them. After reading forums on tons of people having the same issue, I figured I would try and fix the problem and create a tutorial for everyone. Please check out my blog at http://tantht.blogspot.com/ for instructions on how to remove dust blobs from a HD70 as this process worked perfect for me and I no longer have these annoying spots when watching movies!!
My hd70 started flickering around the 1800 hr mark and i always ran it in eco mode, thought i would have gotten at least 2500 hrs. anyway, replaced bulb and after a few days started flickering again after an hr or so being on. thought bulb was faulty so bought another bulb and flickered almost immediately after i turned it on. to bulb out and used my shop vac and a can of air to clean out all vents. after a year (bought it new) you'd be surprised how much dirt it collects. anyway, cleaned thoroughly, replaced bulb and remounted. haven't had the problem since, at least for about 3 months now. keeping my fingers crossed. hope this helps.
We have a optima hd65 projector that has been fine . now it starts the same ,sound ,picture etc. but then after 30 seconds the bulb turns off. hundreds of hours left on bulb. no warning lights.after i shut it off fan comes on as usual.
I have an optoma hd72 did the same thing. I pulled the bulb out and used a can of air/dust to clean it out, spraying it in all the vents as well. it fixed my problem also, and there wasn't much dust in it.
I hav bought sharp protector since 2 yrs n we use it for average 3 to 4 hrs in a day we hav already replaced the blub once as the person who sold it said that blub life is only 1800 hours n the blub has gone off again n the blub is costing Rs 18000 which very expensive iam regretting buying fr yr company as a friend of mine is using panasonic protecjor since 6yrs n use is for 8 hours a day n the bulb life is still on. please help me what am I suppose to do.
thankyou maya fr india.
Crazy, but its true!
I just bought a used Optima EP 758 an to my dismay a horizontal white lightning bolt flickered across my screen about every 15 second...after hours of setting it up! I found this blog and pulled the unit off the ceiling shaking my head in disbelief. After carefully unscrewing and pulling the case apart...sure enough, DUST! not a lot, but plenty on the fan wheel and on the inside of the case. I was too nervous to use my compressor (Especially at 90psi, enough to drive my framing gun) to blow it out, so I just used canned air and gently wipe EVERYTHING with a clean white (Easy to see what you picked up) undershirt (Thinner cotton). Put everything back together an WALLAH! FIXED!!!
...Crazy, just crazy!
Thank you for the fix blog
Yep, it also worked for me, on my Optoma EP716.
OptomaUSA wanted me to ship it to them to get it fixed, (I'm in France)....
and since it was not under warranty anymore, I decide to take it apart and clean it.(dust it off)
Which totally solved the problem!
Thanks so much for the tip, it was very much appreciated!
The Solution above works. My Acer PD525 would work great for about five minutes then start flickering, Changing to drap colors, and turn off. I replaced the bulb and still had the same problem. Thanks to this thread, I opened the box and dusted. It has been working great for 48 hrs and still kicking. Who would have thought dust would cause it to do that. Thanks so much. I was about to buy a new one because Acer Tech support is non existant unless you want to pay $2.50 a minute. Even if i had gotten a hold of them they would have had me send it in for repairs. This thread has saved me at least $1,000. Thanks again!!!

u need to open the 4 screws on the sides
then there is one screw in the center at the bottom
the u also need to unscrew the nut screws on the vga connector.once done
press the top of the panel near the keypad & the front cover will come off
similar is the procedure for the back cover.
when you try to lift the top cover make sure not be hasty, open slowly s there is a film connector for the keypad that is connected to the main board, take care not to damge it
once you have acess to the main board
loosen 2 screws on the mainboard & then press the outer side of the main board.there is a 100 pin connector that connects the main board to the dlp engine.this is the cause of the problem that you mentioned.this should fix your prob

I turned on my Mitsubishi HC5000 projector one day and it was displaying green, inteads of the usual blue. I thought it would go away but when i watch movies on it, everything is green. What should I do?
Our Infocus LP350 light flickers. We tried the resync button but that did not work
We have an Epson PowerLite 54c that starts to flicker after it has been on for an hour. The screen will flicker with or without a computer image. Tried to synch but that did not solve anything. Is it the lamp or some other problem?
Hi, I have the same problem with my Optoma HD70 projector. After running it for around 30 mins, the screen starts to show flickers of green. It gets progressively bad and in the next 2 mins, it will completly turns green and the lamp LED starts to glow. Any help to fix the problem will be highly appritated.
Wiggling the wire from the computers screen output makes the colours do funky. so I bought new connecting computer leads and they are worse- i get very bad quality pic from a DVD. The boulbs only done 700 hours- so dont think its the problem.
I have or should I say had the same problem with my hd70. I noticed flickering after just 4-5 months use just watching television and the odd movie. Tried the very first solution. Couldn't figure out how to get the back off so tried jetting it out with my air compressor and eureka it worked not even a flicker of a flicker thanks. Kevin from Birmingham.
I have a Sharp XR-11XC with the same intermittent flicker problem.
