Sounds like the tub is unbalanced from either a bearing/pulley suspension problem or the unit has broken something off in between the tub and outer portion of the unit before you get to the walled panels, and you are hearing a rubbing and thumping noise. This is not a typical DIY job since the entire back panel of the unit needs to be pulled off and diagnosed.
All dryers have some type of roller system that supports the drum as it turns. It sounds like one of the rollers or roller bearings has worn and is making that thumping noise. If you have some basic skills and good general mechanical sense you could fix it yourself. Make sure the dryer is unplugged before you attempt anything.
Thoroughly check the inside of the dryer for
any foreign objects with hard surfaces. Sometimes items that fall out
of pockets become stuck inside a dryer and make thumping noises.
Check for level
Make sure the dryer is level. A dryer that is out of level may not
rotate properly. Banging or thumping noises from unleveled dryers are
common, particularly if the dryer is resting against another metal
object such as a washer.
Check rollers
If the thumping noises are present only for the first few minutes of
the drying cycle the likely culprit is rollers. If the rollers are
warped they will need to be replaced and a professional should be
called in to help
check the inside of the drumm make sure none of the fins are loose,
but sounds more like the wheel rollers are bad, sometimes is loud when it starts then seems to go away a little after the dyer get hotter, is the heat that makes the metal bearings make less noise. u can replace the wheels, the belt an tensioner at the same time is cheaper to pruchase the kit an have it all done the first time! bad wheels put more stress on belt an eventually will break apart so just order the entire kit
You may have a rear drum support issue. There are 2 rollers,(supports), 1 at 4 o'clock and 1 at 7 o'clock. If the bushing in the roller becomes elongated,(elliptical), it will give a thumping noise, as you describe.
