SOURCE: Dell 1720dn Error and Toner light on

After replacing the drum unit you have to tell the printer that you've done it(it's not smart enough to figure it out itself). Have the front door open and press and hold the Cancel button on the printer until all lights flash in sequence then let go. Then close door and try.

Turn off the power using the switch on the back of the printer. Open the front door of the printer. Hold Continue button down, power on the printer, and continue to holding Continue down until the LEDs begin to flash. When the LEDs start to flash, release Continue button. The LEDs will continue flashing until only Error LED will be lit. Close the front door. Continue, Ready/Data, Toner Low and Load Paper LEDs should be lit. After you replace the imaging drum, you should reset the imaging drum's counter. To reset the counter, press and hold the Cancel button cancel_button_0.jpg until all lights flash in sequence.

I hope this helps.

Dell 1720dn all indicator lights flash after printer is powered on for several minutes. Once this happens, I can no longer print. If I power cycle the printer, it will function normally for a time.

this printer is actually a modified LExmark E238...if printer under warranty, demand they replaceit.
if all lights flash..usually means a hardware printer problem Main board.
