USB cable randomly stopped working with my computer?

I've not had any complications when it comes to uploading photos with this camera at all until now. When I plug the USB cable into both the camera and the computer and turn the camera on, something usually pops up on the camera screen that says "initializing usb connection" that will remain there the entire time i'm uploading photos. But now when I try to upload my photos, the "initializing usb connection" thing only pops up for around 3-4 seconds before it disappears, and then my computer won't recognize that the camera is plugged in at all. Does anyone know where the problem lies?

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Try putting the memory card in a USB card reader attached to your computer, which should see it as another drive. Write-protect the card first.

You neglected to specify the make and model of your camera so I'll assume it uses a memory card of some type.
