the red standby light is blinking after i try to turn it on but it wont actually turn on, just blinks red on standby, have googled for an answer with no luck
The 5 blinks can indicate a picture tube starting to fail. Carefully open up the back and look for the flyback transformer. It will be the part with the large red wire coming out the top that goes to the side of the picture tube. There should be 2 controls on the flyback, screen and focus. Turn the screen control slightly clockwise. If the set stays on, the picture tube is starting to fail and you have bought yourself time to find a replacement. If that fails, then you will need to investigate other possibilities that will involve soldering. Let me know if you need to do that.
The 6 blinks indicate no horiszontal. This can be as simple as a couple of bad capacitors or the "jungle" IC. If you can solder, please post another question with the model and a brief description indicating that you can work in the set and we'll continue to track this down.

circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks
for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function.
Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761
and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on
the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning
up screen A2 slightly.

I have the same problem Sometimes the TV will turn on...not sure how it decided to turn on.

I have this problem now also. For a little while the tv has turned on and instantly turned back off. Now all I get is the tv attempting to turn on but then the standby light keeps blinking and it still does not turn on. I noticed the light blinks 6 times and pauses continuously. I wonder if that means anything, I havent found my manual yet.
what is it with the sony's? i have the exact same problem!!! the cable guy is comming tomorrow!!! could things get any worse? if the tv won't come on ,,, how can i get my cable??? what the hell is a standby timer anyway? why does the tv turn itself off and on? unhappy

Mine is blinking 5 times then pauses and blinks 5 times again.It has been doing this for over a year and the tv still works fine.Mine is the WEGA 36
i have exactly the same problem. I have 5 blinks and stops. this is retarded.. this exact thign happened about 9 months ago.. and after tht for a day or two. i stopped watching it.. now after tht it started working.. now after tht.. it stopped working yesterday. then i shut it off and turned it on, it worked now AGAIN it has stopped today.. i called sony ppl.. they r like its some tube problem tht they dont know. i need to call sony tech.. but i m not about to pay for someting tht i might need help with, as it did happen b4 and it started to work.. so i was wondering if there is somethign else tht I am not pressing?
