Black screen w/small portion of top of picture showing at bottom of screen

I purchased a used Sony KP-53HS10, rear projection TV from a friend. It's about six years old and worked fine for three weeks, after I moved it the hour drive to my house. Suddenly we turned it on one day and the only viewable portion of the picture was the top-fifth of the picture, seen at the very bottom of the screen, with the red, blue and green lines surrounding the top of this "picture". The rest of the screen is black. One day the entire picture appeared for a few minutes and then the above situation returned again. Since then (a week) there has been no change. "Flash focus" does not help and the viewable portion of the picture does not include the on-screen menu, so I can't see what I'm doing with that and have resisted "flying blind", so far. Sound is fine and the problem exists when using DVDs and VCR, so it's not a signal problem. It is connected through a cable box.

    Arpi,

Thanks for your simple and confident advice! I take it from the wording of your response that you're pretty sure about the source of this problem and will attempt to find a pro to assist me with it. Can you give me any idea of the cost of the "fix"?

Thanks, once again, Arpi. If you would permit me one more question...is the fix a new component or does it require simply re-soldering the current component?

Thanks and have a great weekend, yourself!

    Hello,

the price is something I am not sure about (I am from Europe-Serbia). Maybe the best for you if you find a technician with very good references who is very well equipped.
Or, the other, maybe more expensive solution contact your nearest Authorized Sony Service.

    Have a nice weekend.

There is a chance that re-soldering will solve the problem

I have a Sony projection TV KP-53HS10. From one

It is most likely the convergence board. Rear projection TVs use three lights to display the image. The image is aligned via the convergence circuit. After many many hours of use the capacitors and resistors on the board lose their tolerances. It is very expensive to repair if you take into account the price for a new TV and the quality of the image you will be getting if you do have it repaired.

The screen looks out of focus and the top and botton bend inward.

Remove front bottom panel behind it is a small black control box top controls are focus controls for R/G/B and Bottom 3 controls are your screen drives adjust one at a time turn off G/B adjust red first, then Do Green and Blue fter adjusting focu to each tube leave them set then adjust screen drive turn color off adjust RGB for a Black and white picture get as close as you can then turn color back If after doing this you still have blurry looking picture look down into Tubes you should be able to see picture clearly in each one if you cannot see picture then projection Fluid need to be changed out. On My sony kp 53s75 tv the picture does not fill the whole screen on the HD channels

it is most likely normal--first generation HD sets were 4X3 which means picture is either small left and right or top and bottom; sets which have 16X9 offer full screen HD

Sony KP-53HS10 rear proj TV - picture goes on & off

If the adjustment of the screen settings does not fix your problem, its likely that one or more of the CRTs (picture tubes) is defective.

And, the CRTs for these sets are hard to find and expensive.

HI,
No this is not a fuse problem, Audio is OK but video is not present. This shows that problem may occurred in various section like Horizontal section Video procession section But one thing is important that this is due to miner components like Resistance or Capacitor. So,you need not to much worry about it.Just contact any expert nearby.

Screen goes black and resets during HD shows

I just posted this to another Sony owner:

Another point; HD Ready does not mean that it is HD compatible without the addition of an optional part.
The title only implies that it can be adapted to HD reception.
If you did not purchase it with the set, check your user guide to see what you need to make it whole.
You may have to seek this add-on on eBay since it is not guaranteed that Sony will still offer it.

You might want to check this:
