Starter making whirring noise.

Just replaced the starter in my 2000 jeep Cherokee, and now the starter is whirring. After letting my car sit for a few hours it won't even start, the starter just turns over constantly. The weird thing is if I turn the key to the on position and wait until my battery needle goes up it will start then. The battery is only a few months old and it hasn't givin me any trouble so far.

When you say it won't start you mean it won't crank, right ?

If you have a duralast starter from auto zone, that may be the problem.
Aftermarket brand starters and alternators can be lemons sometimes.
A mechanic would check for voltage at the starter with the key in the on and start positions. Also check the ground connections.
Its possible the starter is not getting full battery voltage for some reason.

Do you have an alarm on this? If you do, that is most likely the problem. There seems to be a problem with the alarms. You may want to have a new key made just in case. Sometimes the keys are magnetically charged and after time, it wears off.

SOURCE: try to start car and nothing happens. replaced

Do the dash lights come on ? They should come on when the key is turned to the on position. If nothing happens check the engine relay. It is not too expensive to replace if you really want to eliminate that as the problem. Check all wires going to the starter and make sure it is wired correctly.

Curious, do you have an autostart installed? I had that happen that the Autostart shorted and just kept telling my starter to continue cranking

1999 jeep cherokee sport cranks wont crank

Most likely is intermittent in starter solenoid relay

Next most likely is key switch start connection intermittent. a tester will have to be used to find where the power is being lost from the start terminal of ignition switch to starter solenoid pilot connection to the main starter output power from solenoid to starter main contactor.

After driving for a while and shutting my jeep off it will not restart without sitting for a few hours

It sounds like a bad starter solenoid/starter, because a starter sits so close to a engine and exhaust that over the years the heat starts breaking down the components and when you drive your Jeep the starter solenoid gets "heat soaked" so when you've been driving your Jeep around for awhile and then turn it off the solenoid is "heat soaked", it needs to cool off before it will engage the starter again. Sometimes it can take up to a few hours to work again. Some people hit the starter w(the engine off) with a hammer to try to free it up.

The solution is to replace the starter with a new one and your Jeep will start up every time. Most starters come with a new solenoid already attached so it's best to replace them both.

Cherokee intermitant grinding noise in neutral

Is it when the engine first starts? It sounds like to me that the starter is getting stuck in the fly wheel. what happens is when you go to start it, the solenoid push's the gear out and spins the gear almost one full action, the grinding noise could be the starter staying engaged after the motor has starter but quickly comes out of it after driving out of it. just a thought.

When new battery is connected starter whirs without key in ignition -- 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck on, most likely need to replace the starter, sometimes what can be done is tap the solenoid with a wrench or a small hammer and it may come loose, if it stops i would still recommend replacing the starter because it will happen again 9/10 times. Also check the wiring to the starter and make sure the start wire is not shorted or installed improperly. If there is constant voltage at the smaller start signal wire, the problem is somewhere in the wiring or the keyswitch.
