The lens on my Canon digital camera will not close... i am unable to take a pciture and do not know the reason for this....when the camera is put on i am able to see my old pictures but when i click to take a new picture the screen is blank..i dont know what to do...please help...i have the canon power shot sd 500 camera and the problem that appears is the E18...... please help me
The S2iS camera is stuck with lens expanded and E18 error code. Switching on the camera, for some seconds the lens motor tries to unlock them and a lot of click-click-click-... is heard. I've tryied to shake and shock the camera and the lens, with no solution. I've removed all the external visible mini-screws but the camera box don't open. I'm going to buy Canon Powershot SX10 IS.
It just happened the other day. The lens is staying extended and the error message E18 is showing. I haven't used the camera in dusty or dirty environments so I can't see why it would be dust or dirt preventing the lens from retracting. I really like this camera but a friend of mine bought the same camera at the same time and he already had to get his fixed for the same problem (it cost him $150). I was hoping mine would not succumb to the same thing but it now has. I don't know if spending the money to fix it is wise...if it is recurring problem, I'd be better off just buying a new one (and from what I see on this forum, many of Canon's camera suffer the same problem so I may have to ge to another manufacturer). Has anyone gotten their camera fixed only to have it happen again??

When I turn my Canon powershot s2is on and try to take a picture, it clicks and a 'E18' error code appears. I have to shut off camera and turn back on and try again. By then I missed the shot!

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

I dont know what error E18 means, check cannon support for that, but welcome to the world of DISPOSABLE CAMERAS, I have replaced 3 cameras in 3 years, 2 because of lens and shutter issuses.
Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

I just had the same problem. I sent the camera to the factory repair place and they fixed it in 5 days free. Even tho the camera is two years old and out of warranty.
the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.
