Julius Noble Posted on Jul 26, 2012

I have a philips flat tv Model # 42pf9630a/37, lost the remote and I can't program a remote to access the menu. The Closed caption is on and the screen format is not right.

Closed caption is on, screen is not the right format (heads are cut off). I can't program a remote to get me into the menu.

I just checked and your specific remote is available on eBay for between $15 and $35. Just search the model number.

If you don't like eBay then consider a Logitech Harmony remote. They are easy to program and they will have all the functionality of your original remote including menu functions. I have two Logitech Harmony One remotes and there isn't a single thing I can't do that the stock remotes can do better. They are sold at Amazon, Tigerdirect, Walmart, Bestbuy, and just about any other electronics store.

SOURCE: removing closed captioning

Worked it out. The Direct TV remote has a yellow button and that did it. I don't know whether I had inadvertently programmed it that way but problem gone.
Thanks.

It's a common problem with the software in the TV. Updating the latest software for the TV should fix the problem. Here's a link for the Philips web site to get the software upgrade.

I can't turn the closed captioning OFF on my insgnia flat screen tv model NS-L CD37. i have a universal rca remote & the closed captioning won't go away - HELP !

The problem is that the universal remote is not sending the correct IR signal to your units IR receiver, regaurdless whether or not you turned the captions on with the universal, it is unable to send the signal to turn them off, if you have a menu button on your unit you could try accessing the closed caption option that way, alternatively you can do a system reset, if you can access that menu option, you may need to do a tv retune to get your stations, but the closed captioning should be off. I hope this helps. Good luck.

How do I get the closed captioned turned off my Phillips TV?

Check the menu or display set up - highlight Closed Captioning with remote and disable, if you are using cable box - and have no success, go to the settings on the cable remote and check the closed captioning there.

Turning off the closed captioning without the remote.

I had the same problem. I got a Philips Magnavox Universal Remote that has a closed captioning button [CC]. Here's a link to the same type:
