Where can I get appropriate USB cable, i.e, parallel to USB not the original parallel to parallel?

So you have an old Zip drive with a parallel port? You can't connect that using USB. Nor can you connect that to a computer running any version of Windows newer than XP.

Two options:
1) Buy a USB version of the Zip drive and use it to read your disks. Used, USB Zip drives seem to run around $35 or so.
2) Get a computer using an old version of Windows. If it doesn't have a parallel port, you should be able to buy a PCI card with a parallel port on it.

Once you're able to access the files, copy them onto a USB thumb drive. For $10, you can get a 32 GB USB drive, which should hold everything from at least 320 Zip disks.

Disc drive is not working?

Floppy, Hard, Zip, Jazz, Compact or DVD? What do you mean by not working? Is it plugged in? Is it a USB drive? Is it an internal or external drive? What is your computer? What is your operating system?

My xbox shows this code 3080-3151-b200-0700-c000-0059 and SYSTEM UPDATE STOPPED

Get a USB ready and Download this file

http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/b/5/4b502530-bc35-4477-b25a-aefdcfb7f504/systemupdate_12625_usb.zip

Once finished

Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.

Unzip the file. If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.

Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive.

Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.

If there is a disc in the console, remove it.

Turn off the console.

Remove all console storage devices, including any USB flash drives, external hard drives, or the internal hard drive on the Xbox 360 S console.

Plug the USB flash drive with the update into a USB port on console.

Turn on the console. When the console starts, the software update should automatically start.

Thanks

I have a 100mb data disk that I'd like to convert into a CD rom - I don't have an Zip Drive (1990) anymore - would there be anybody who could do the conversion?

I can't do the conversion for you but have you looked on eBay or something similar for an external Iomega Zip drive? These can be connected to your existing computer via USB. Use caution though, I don't know how well the Zip drive will work with Windows Vista or Windows 7 or any Mac computers.

I have an HP Mini 1035NR that I need to restore to factory settings. It came with a recovery disk but doesn't have a cd slot

What they don't tell you when those are sold is that you should get yourself an external USB cd/dvd drive. Thses work very well and are slim line products. If you have a spare laptop cd/dvd drive, Ebay sells the housing and usb cable to convert an internal laptop drive into a USB external.

An external USB drive consists of tow parts:

a hard drive (usually a standard IDE or SATA drive), and

an enclosure

The enclosure is the box containing the drive. It also includes an interface to convert the data from the IDE or SATA interface on the drive to a USB (2) signal. Some enclosures include and internal power supply. The Freeagent has the power supply externally.

Hope that's what you mean.
