Sounds like a dry solder joint

The set will need to be professionally diagnosed. There could be a # of things causing your problem. Playing the guessing game can get quite expensive.

Might require thorough cleaning and servicing by a qualified service technician.

Have you check the wires in the back because I know sometimes it can short out the tv??

What you are describing is called " capacitor flu".

The capacitors in your tv produce a charge that energizes the screen, and they are failing on you.

The popping noise is the capacitors trying to send electric pulses to the screen, but because one or more of them are defective, the screen doesn't come on, just sound.
And then when the protection circuit kicks in, it shuts the set back off to prevent further damage.

If your tv is under warranty, then by all means send it in for warranty work.
If, like most, the warranty is expired, then you might find that it is cheaper to get a new tv instead of fixing the old one.

This is because in order to make sure that the problem is completely resolved, the repair center will have to remove and replace every capacitor in the set.
This is a time consuming effort, and can be quite expensive to do.

I wish I had better news for you, but sadly this is not the case.

If you do decide to repair it, Fry's, Staple's, and Best Buy are the safest place to get the repairs done at.

They all have trained service techs for this type of repair.

Somewhat easy fix
1 Unplug your tv from the wall
2 Let it rest for 10-20 min
3 Plug it back in and try again
4 If this doesn't work, I'm sorry snd you might have to get it sent in for repair or replacement

That television doesn't have a VGA input, but it does have an S-video in. So this is the cable that you would need to connect to get the video image on the screen. However, s-video does not carry sound. So you either run the sound from the laptop still, or use the earphone jack to bring the sound out to your surround amp, or tv.

Picture frozen on one picture for some channels and blank on others. Sound is on. What could this be? We have a 50" Sanyo. HELP!
