The bobbin is difficult to wind. I follow instructions but the tread still bypasses the 'hook' where it should go to thread. It goes under the bobbin and winds around the stem of the bobbin. Any suggestions?
I've never seen this type of winding system. But from the manual on page 10, it shows that in order to disengage the machine from sewing mode.. you need to have the bobbin cover slide plate slightly open.

Also make sure that your bobbin doesn't have any burrs. If it does, toss it and use a new one.
Thanks. Been there done that. :-) I have tried many things. I watched how it all worked and finally decided that the thread was not connecting through the loop in the front of the bobbin. I turn the wheel by hand until the thread is at the hook. Then slide the cover down until I can take the tweezers and hook the thread in place by hand. Then close the cover to the position it should be to wind. Yahoo! it works. Lot of trouble just to wind a bobbin but it is my moms machine and she does not want to part with it. Everytime I visit I wind bobbins for her. :-) Thanks for the advise.
Thanks for letting us know your solution. Have you considered purchasing an independent bobbin winder? That way she can just wind bobbins when she needs them and avoide the hassle with the machine. http://www.amazon.com/Limited-Edition-Si...
:-) you said you had never seen this type of winding system. So you do not know that it will not fit on the bobbin winder. These bobbins have a pin on the inside of the bobbin instead of a hole like normal bobbins. That was the first thing mom asked me, could she use the bobbin winder. No can not. It is a real pain of a system and I wish she would get another machine. But she is 87 and is set in her ways. LOL THANKS
LOL I have a 1948 model 28 vibrating shuttle system she should remember using something similar at one point. LOL I also have a 1949 monkey ward model 30 with "automatic tension" And REVERSE!! woot! lol I've been rehabbing both of them... getting these old girls to sew. If I were you... I would sneak off with a bobbin of hers and go to a sewing store... just SEE if it would work on those bobbin winders. I find that most the time the person who answers the phone doesn't know squat... (can barely count change) So it's best to just go and try. ;)
You must have a "Touch and Sew" model. All the descriptions fit it!! Yes, it works like a charm and one does not need to rethread the needle!!! OK, here are a couple of things to double check:
Add a Comment1. oops, computer glitch. But here are the things to double check: 1. Make sure to use the correct bobbin ( it is rather flat looking and wider than the usual bobbins.) 2. Open the bobbin case area by sliding the cover plat to open position. 3. Push the small leaver marked with circles to the left (make sure it is all the way to the left. The leaver makings will look like a shooting target). 4. Begin winding the bobbin ... it should work like a charm.

SOURCE: Bobbin won't wind
I have checked the gears underneath and see no missing teeth for the bobbin part. The bobbin "seat" does raise, but does not engage. Thanks
SOURCE: sewing machine has bobbin thread would around winding shaft
If the bobbin is on correctly try crossing the thread before going through the tensioner which should solve this problem and also a more evenly wound bobbin.

It sounds like you don't have any tension on the thread when winding the bobbin. Make sure that you are running the thread through the tension disc on the top of the machine before going to the bobbin winder.

slide plate may be worn - i had the same problem. try holding down the center of the bobbin with a pin while slide plate is in the winding position.

I just figured out why my bobbine was winding on shaft instead of on the bobbin. first of all make sure the bobbin is setting up high enough, top of bobbin needs to be a fraction higher then the bobbin shuttle, next check to make sure there are no burrs on the bobbin, then make sure that the thear is catching in the groove (**** in top) of the bobbin. In order to get mine to wind i had to lett the tread go down and then slip the thread in the groove. also remember to leave the pressure foot up do not put it down. let me know if this helps.
