Have a Dell Latitude C840 service tag 2x5rp11. When the laptop boots It has an error message "cannot load the dll CnxtSdk.dll". And right after the another error message pops up reading "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application". I do this and computer seems to resume properly. However this happens everytime I boot the laptop.

You are looking in the right direction but your best option here is a restore to factory defult. Do you know the procedure for your particular laptop, if not then have a look at the Dell website. Do you have cd or dvd restore disks?
I often get laptops in with similar problems and first step is to take hard drive out and do backup of the docs then restore. I also have a WinXP live Hirens boot cd to boot up with and test everything.
You can remove or change the Window's User or administrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access to download the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot up the laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CD which contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removal program. Click on one of these links to download HIREN'S BOOTCD :- http://www.hirensbootcd.net/http://67.20.82.163/

Hi try pressing the ESC button during boot up, sometimes its the delete button, then select this drive by scrolling down, select CD drive for primary boot device, save changes and reboot. Hope this helps, come back to me if you need more help?
press F2 to get into the dell bios and be sure the HDD is listed as first to boot, Then if restart turns the same error, press F10 and run the pre-boot system assesment check. if error 0141 appears, your HDD is failing and needs to be replaced
You operating system is corrupted meaning that your harddrive has failed or you got a bad virus. Only fix is having the operating system reinstalled and mostly likely that data is lost. Sorry to have to break the news to you and hope that you can get this resolved.
Quick power off means a hardware fault. Remove the memory sticks and boot the laptop. If you get an error message, the memory sticks are bad. Replace them. If it still doesn't boot to BIOS, your motherboard has failed and needs to be replaced. It can't be "repaired" cost-effectively. And since the Inspiron C840 is a very old laptop, probably not worth fixing. You CAN get your data off the hard drive by slaving it to another computer. Google " hooking up an external hard drive".
try reseating the hard drive. Unscrew two screws on bottom right of laptop, where it IR window is. Slide the cover down, then out. Make sure the bottom connector is flush, then slide it back in
