What you are experiencing are symptoms of a failed CCD in the camera. Many years ago Canon did have some models that were affected by bad ccd's, that has long gone and past. Canon does not repair the G12 free unless you are still within the one year warranty on the product.
If you need to have it repaired, this is the place for these models: www.camerasandparts.com These guys strictly service the Canons and no other models at all. The work they do is superb and it's not much at all to look after this problem. Through them it runs $89 for parts, labor, the servicing for the camera, and return shipping included. The best part is their work is excellent. Bets of luck with the issue.
Go through www.CamerasAndParts.com It's the best option for this problem and they automatically do the internal correction so this doesn't keep happening on the G12. Canon does not repair the G12 free unless you are within the 12 months with proof of purchase and they verify the problem was not caused by the user.
