We have a Philips DVD Recorder a Freeserve Digital box and a TV. Since adding the DVD Recorder we cannot tune in Freeserve at all and DVD's play only in black and white. Help Please. ...

Hi Jack,

And if you remove the DVD Recorder, everything is back to normal?

Initially, I would suspect that your DVD is set to PAL system and not to NTSC (or could be the other way around). Could you pls post back with the exact model number of the Philips DVD Recorder?

Additionally, could you pls detail how the Freeserve Digital box is connected to the Philips DVD Recorder and then to the TV? Pls indicate if you are using Video IN/OUT, S-Video, HDMI, SCART, RF IN/OUT.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

CANNOT GET PHILIPS DVDR3305 TO RECORD ON PANASONIC TV.TX-L37D25B WHILE WATCHING ANOTHER CHANNEL?.

What is your source? Since the DVDR3305 has an analog PAL tuner and most TV stations are broadcasting in digital, you probably have some sort of set top box connected to the recorder. If you change the channel on the set top box, you will record the program on the new channel. If you are recording PAL and your TV has a PAL tuner, you should be able to just record one show while watching another with the DVDR3305 daisy-chained to the TV. Just make sure to change the TV channel not the channel on the DVDR3305.

If your TV has a digital tuner, you can split the signal before the set-top box to record one channel and watch another. (Note: basic splitters will cause some extra loss of signal and may reduce a digital signal below the threshold needed to tune in the signal. An amplified splitter can avoid this - when the amplifier is working properly.) Otherwise, you need a second set-top box (or a dual tuner set-top box).

On my set-up with an aerial antenna, I would put the splitter between the wall jack and the electronics. The incoming cable goes to the splitter, then cable 1 goes to the TV. Cable 2 goes to the set-top box. Tune the set-top box to the channel to record and check the settings with the TV set to the DVD source. (DVD set to record on Tuner (and the specific channel of the set-top box output) or front s-video or EXT1 or EXT2.) Then change the TV back to the TV source and change to the channel for the second program.

The manual for the DVDR3305 is available from Philips. The link to the manual is http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvdr3305_05/dvdr3305_05_dfu_eng.pdf .
I hope this helps.

(I actually use an A/B switch and do not try to watch a second program on the TV connected to the DVD recorder. However, most of my recordings are for time-shifting of programs that air when I can't watch any TV program.)

We have a Philips DVD3460 recorder. Where in the manual does it inform us on while Watching T.V. and DVD is recording another T.V. channel?. Would love to know " how to do this"?

It depends on your setup.
Think of the Philips DVD3460 as an independent, standalone television set. It has its own analogue tuner, and its own video input.
If you have an analogue RF TV signal (coaxial cable) going in to the Philips DVD3460, you can watch whatever you want on any other TV connected to the TV signal coaxial cable, since the regular analog TV cable carries all of the channels.
However, if you are using a cable or satellite box and use the "Video in" function of the DVD recorder or just have the DVD recorder tuned to channel 3 or 4 to record from a cable or satellite box, you can't record one channel and watch another unless you have a second cable box..

COMCAST has just completed digital migration in my town, in January of 2010. They issued free DTA adapters or free set top boxes. Each choice has a new remote that would bring in all the COMCAST...

The latter part of your comments look familiar. Virgin Net did a similar thing and when the transmitters went to digital, all analogue recorders were rendered useless. All they could do is record the channel you are watching!
Sign of the times I think!

CANNOT TUNE TV CHANNELS FROM TERRESTIAL AERIAL INTO NEW SAMSUNG RECORDER

You need to purchase a digital converter box in order to receive the proper signal, the only exception would be if your antenna is digital ready. I would suggest talking to a tv tech to find out if you need additional changes.

Cable box, digital service, channels not appearing

connect the RF lead from the wall to your cable box then out from that to your dvd then out from your dvd to your tv. now connect a scart lead from the cable box to AV 2 on the DVD then connect AV 1 on the DVD to your TV if you have a second scart on your tv connect that to the cable box. NOW on the DVD select AV2 now whatever is on the cable box will be recorded onto DVD/VCR. Put the DVD recorder into VCR mode and set it to auto tune all the Digital Video Broadcasts. You cannot physically tune the cable boxes own channels into the DVD via RF it has to be via a scart.

Can't tune stations from freeview box to DVDR3380/5

You can only record freeview channels through your box.

Assuming the digi-box has two scart sockets, connect as follows:

  • Scart 1 or TV scart of the digi-box to the TV.
  • Scart 2 or VCR/DVD scart of the digi-box to scart 1 of the DVDR3380.
The TV aerial should already be connected through the digi-box and DVDR3380 to the TV

To record from the digi-box, select AV1 / E1 / EXT1 on the DVDR3380
If you are doing timer recordings, you will also need to leave the freeview box on the channel you wish to record, or set the freeview box timer.
