Question about Samsung SC-D67 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I have a mini DV recorder with multiple mini DV cassettes from over the years. I have used programs like winDV to capture them to my hard drive in AVI format and TMPenc to author and encode them to burn onto DVD without problem (well, tinny sound, but I planned to work on that). Anyway, I went to capture some of my more recent tapes the other day and it started getting all mosaic and garbled on me and on capturing, it created many small broken avi files instead of one big one. I disconnected it from the firewire cable, and it appeared to have permanently distorted the few seconds I tried to capture. But if I try to record something brand new, no problem. Today I tried to just play a different older tape and the same distortion started occuring without it even being connected to my computer. I ran a head cleaner tape through it twice so far, but I fear doing anymore due to compromising the integrity of my old memeories on film. Any ideas?
It sounds to me that the damage was created prior to you attempting to capture the video.
There are several ways to help prevent these issues. As a rule I would suggest only to use miniDV cassettes to record only once, as they are prone to errors such as you describe. Also, keep the tape heads clean and inline. tape heads have a limited mileage and need to be replaced after a while.
We all become victim to the mosaic problems you describe, and it can be repaired on the computer, although it is a painstaking manual process.
If you have footage that is damaged in this way and you really feel you need it repaired, please contact me, I will be happy to offer my services.
