SOURCE: Brother HL-5240 drum light flashing

Normally clearing the drum count the machine has to be on open front cover as if to change the drum press and hold the button in for about 10 second then release and shut the door. This should reset the count if not please get back to me and I'll check the service manual to see if anything in that.

Thanks J

I have small black dots down the left hand margin of each printed page approx 10cm apart. MFC8870DW

10cm means it's caused by a large roller. The only roller large enough for that would be in the drum. Replace your drum and it should clear up, the model number of the drum is DR520.

How to extend the life of a TN-330 drum kit for MFC-7840W Wireless Printer

If you have received any of the following messages on your Brother MFC-7840W wireless multifunction printer while utilizing the TN-330 drum kit then you may not have to replace your drum, at least not yet.

Drum End Soon
Drum Error
Toner Life End
Toner Low

I had this issue happen to me about 150 pages ago (some text, some pictures) and I still haven't replaced my drum after I executed this little trick.

Take your drum kit out of your printer (make sure you turn off and unplug any cables first)

Take some black electrical tape and cut a inch by inch square off.

Place the black tape over the optical port as shown in the picture below.

Then put the drum back into the printer, cable everything back up and turn the power on.

Your drum should last a long time beyond what was supposed to be a low toner.

Hopes this saves you some money.

Drum Life Ends soon - Brother

The problem with this is the design. Each toner cartridge has a microchip on it, that counts the pages you print. The company has determined that you get x amounts of prints. Then you have to replace it, empty or not. This printers do not work the same way as an expensive professional business copier. In an pro style there is a spent toner cartridge that collects all of the wasted toner that is on the drum. On a small business/home style this spent toner goes back into the cartridge. There is no level indicator, even on the inkjet printer. They too, have a chip that says you have x amount of prints/cleaning cycles they can go through. Look up inkjet refill kits or inkjet cartridge programmer.

I just installed a new drum and toner cartrideg last week and the error message says drum is near end. Should the toner cartride be replaced?

Hi there,

After replacing the drum and toner you may need to reset the drum life of the machine. This is how to reset the drum life:
Open the front cover where the drum and toner are located. Press the clear/back key. Lcd should show Replace Drum? Then press 1 for yes. Lcd should show accepted. Close the front cover the press stop/exit. Lcd now should show the date and time.
Hope this helps. Rate if it works. Thanks

What does it mean when it says Drum near end

Order a new drum, part number DR520, from an office supply store or Brother (http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/us/us/en/monolasermfc/mfc8460n_all/c_o/index.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc8460n_all&cao=dr ). The drum transfers the toner onto the paper and has a finite lifetime - approx. 25000 pages (1 page/job). Change the drum when the print quality decreases or the message changes to replace drum or drum end.
To replace, open the front cover and remove the drum and toner cartridge assembly (wait until the machine cools if it has been printing). Avoid the electrodes on the assembly. Hold down the lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Unpack the new drum and put the toner cartridge in the new drum (when it is locked the lever should lift automatically). Place the assembly back in the all-in-one. Do not close the front cover. Press Clear/Back on the control panel. The LCD should ask "Replace Drum?". Use the up/down arrows to select 1. Yes and hit OK. When the LCD shows "Accepted", close the cover.

I hope this helps.

My fax machine rarely gets used --maybe 20 times in 3 years i have bought 3 new toner cartridges because they seem to dry out,, i have removed and shaken it to get SOME ink out. Is it the drum , am i...

That really sux. No way should these cartridges fail unless they are totally out of toner.

A drum should last 12,000 prints.

Are they refills or Genuine Brother cartridges?

I would email Brother Tech Support on this issue.

Will not print, ''drum'' light is on

Open the front cover and pull out the toner/drum unit. Press the (blue) lever to eject toner cartridge, the remainder of the unit is the drum unit that needs replacing. DR520 is the type you need. Get it at any office supply store.
