ours started doing the exact thing after we boiled water on the stove. The steam seems to have set it off.

Same problem. According to Magic Chef, It needs a new motherboard. It's less than a year old so they'll fix it as long as you have a receipt.

Now if I can just find the receipt.

My microwave started doing the same thing about 5 days ago. It is also about 1 year old. I came home form a day of shopping to find my microwave running. When I unplugged it and stuck my hand inside it was very hot. I don't know how long it may have been running before I got home

will go on and beep and then OFF appears and can't do a dammmm thing with it...piece of junk...

  • Anonymous Feb 12, 2009

I can definitely beat these stories about the MC unit...I was having an intermittent on off condition so I took apart the housing (microwave unplugged) and tightened every connection I could find. I then plugged the microwave in (cover still off) to test the unit. Still had the intermittent condition. Then the big bang, I discovered the automatic on 3.5 min problem when I was electrocuted when the damn thing turned on by itself and sent me to the emergency room. I ended up with electrical burns on my hands and chest and muscular pains

Wow. We're not alone. We returned the microwave for a full refund. I didn't let it go to see if it went on for 3.5 minutes. The whole thing was scary enough. Our microwave was a month and a half old. Sounds like they might want to consider recalls rather than repairs.

My Magic chef Microwave also starts by itself the the keyboard locks up.
We have had this unit for 4 years with no problems. I called Magic Chef and they are sending me a new brain for the unit and then someone will come to my home and repair it. NO CHARGE! I am very pleased that they are backing their product like this. God Belss America

Magic Chef sent the new key pad to my house via UPS. I got the part on a Thursday, repair man was comming the following Monday. I decided the wife could'nt wait till Monday (wife decided lol) so I installed it myself. Easy fix for someone mechanicaly inclined. Took me 20 minutes. Microwave now works like new. Thank you Magic Chef.

I have the same problem with my microwave. However, I have had it for 3 years and it just started happening a week ago. Strangest thing! I wonder if remote controls interference could be the problem????

Yes , I think they should also! this is the digital control board that is messing up and the board can be replaced by getting one from them , but ti may not be worth it to you , and this is dangerous as it is acting up , so there is danger involved in the way it is acting

New unit used 3 days. Microwave beeps and screen goes to menu, or set time screen. Sometimes changes the date all by itself. Does this in the middle of the night all night long.

I advice you to contact service if it has guarantee. This seems to be a psychological problem about your oven(!). Technical person need to do an electronic research surgery on its board to see if there is any wrong thing.

My daughter put a metal ring in the microwave to heat up. I was not there, so I did not know what happen and if sparks flared up. But the microwave kept working OK for half a day before acting crazy. ...

There really shouldn't be a correlation between the metal ring in the oven cavity and the erratic operation of the control board. Although it might seem suspicious, what happens inside the oven cavity stays in the oven cavity.

OVERHEATING - Magic Chef Microwave M# MCO160S

Generic questions and comments:

Does your microwave have a "popcorn" setting and are you using it? Is there a rotating table in your machine? Is your popcorn bag elevated on top of a bowl or similar? Are you using some other "sensor" setting? Can you use straight time setting and get it to go past the 1 min 45 second mark?

On my microwave, it takes just about that much time and the popcorn is done ... BUT only if I elevate the bag to about the middle of the oven.

Let me know if this works for you.

Oven turns off

Hi,

You are running the risk of damaging the Magnatron by doing this.

Check the packets you are using, you will have to reduce your power output.

This is because microwaves act by being absorbed by water. There is very little in popcorn and in fat. Once this has been evaporated, the microwave energy builds up (as it is still being produced - but not absorbed), and ends up cooking the magnatron itself.

I have seen countless posts on here after cooking popcorn!

More fun on the hob anyway - and cheaper to buy in bulk!

Dacor Microwave/Conv Oven DCM24S

Placing the bag on an inverted glass bowl or pyrex casserole dish worked!!!!!  For 2 years, I have cursed my Dacor microwave for its inability to make popcorn (burns a hole in the bag, bag stays flat, almost no kernels pop, etc...)  I read the last suggestion to use the glass plate and I am now sitting with a bowl full of perfectly popped popcorn - with only 1 kernel unpopped.  The metal tray in the microwave conducts too many waves through the bag I guess.
Thanks for the solution!

Magic chef microwave shuts down

We had the same problem with our brand new Magic Chef. Before going through the trouble of taking it back I called Home Depot. After talking to a Home Depot Rep I am told that the overheat sensor is under the glass plate directly beneath the popcorn bag. Popcorn gets very hot and the heat of the popcorn causes the sensor to shut the machine down. I would imagine this would be the same for a baked potato.
Very poor design.
I was told to put a microwave safe plate down and put the popcorn bag on it. This should help to reduce the heat and not trip the sensor.
A safety sensor is great, but not if it keeps tripping the machine and shutting down!
