Amana GMH950453BX Gas Furnace Logo
Tony White Posted on Jul 09, 2012

I just bought a house and 3 years ago they installed a amana distiction furnance. My problem is that there is hardly any are coming out of any of the vents. I pulled the fan box and cleaned the squrril cage. it had a lot of pet hair in it. but that didn't help with the air flow. You can barely feel any air coming out any of the vents. Is there a way to speed up the fan or is there something else I need to be looking at ? By the way, the cold air and duct work has been professionally cleaned also.

This is a small furnace is your home about 1,000 sf? If your home is a 2000 sf home it may be too small and therefore low air flow. Otherwise you can try putting high speed black wire to heat on the circuit board. Or you have a main duct down somewhere.

SOURCE: Air handler only blows air for 3-5 minutes before shut off & not cycling frequently

Sounds like it could be a very weak run capacitor on the blower motor. Run capacitors are sized specifically to the needs of the motor. When a run cap gets weak, the motor trys to compensate for it by drawing more power. More power draw = more heat in the motor, then the motor will overheat and shut off to protect itself. When the motor cools off it will automatically restart and run until it overheats again. Keep in mind that I am a technician that normally diagnoses equipment in a hands on manner. There are many practices and concepts that transcend all air conditioning systems but it is a constantly evolving industry. I live in south eastern WA and I don't see Amana units except as window units. It is possible to have something else causing this problem (faulty thermostat, failing thermal relay(if used), problem with electronic controls(if used)) there are a lot of potential variables

SOURCE: Amana Heat Pump Emergency Heat will not come on

On the heating element [behind the coil, (the springy thing)], at the top end of the element, there is a little thermistor I think it is called. You will have to remove the fan shroud. With the power off, check for continuity if you have a multimeter. If that is the problem (no continuity), you can pick one up at al local heating supply. Just have it soldered back in and reconnect. If the thermistor 's continuity is okay, remove the main board under the control knobs. I have seen these boards burn in the back where the relays are soldered on. If you're really good with a solder you can try to re-solder it. If not, it's about as cheap to buy a new unit as it is to buy the board. Good luck.

SOURCE: Blwoing cold air

Possibly, A thermal fuse located in the heater element circut could burn out. the CIrcut would show full voltage to the element but no heat out. Often there is also an auto reset high limit swich this could be out also opr instead of the fuse. THE FUSE IS ALWAYS LOCATED WHERE IT CAN "SEE" the elements. I E Inside the case where the elements are.

SOURCE: Amana Cooling Condensing Unit fan stops spinning after 15 mins

Capacitor, dirty condencer coil causing the motor amps to run too high. But most likely worn bearing on blade side of motor causing it to pull to one side causing it to over heat and shut down. Sleve bearings should have no side play.

Since it only does this in extremely cold times is there any chance that your drain line from the condensate drain is passing thru a space cold enough to freeze it. Good luck and thank you.

Change your heating delay to shut off sooner, you can find this in the installation manual. Also the Thermostat may have delay after heat as well. It is true there could be many variables, but it also sounds like the Heatpump is not charged properly, you will have to have a different tech come out and check that. No need to have the installer mess your system up any further. This solution will only correct the auxilary heat, your heat pump on the other hand will require expert skills.
