I get a message saying "Format Unsupported" on all CD's and DVD's i play on my Bose 321 GS. They all used to play perfectly well until a week ago. These are all original CD's and doesnt have any scratches on it. So please dont give me a solution saying "Clean your CD's" - thats not the problem. Can you help?

We keep getting the message "format unsupported". Even with new CDs and DVDs. Sometimes the same CD can't be played and when we try again an hour later it suddenly can be played without any problem. Who solved this problem? We do like our bose 321 GS system and we would like to enjoy it in the future. P&H from The Netherlands.

i have the same problem and am trying to contact Bose. Will they provide a replacement if the DVD unit is bad?

  • JenDinDC Feb 15, 2009

I bought my original Bose 321 unit in April 2006 and encountered the same problem (format unsupported) and called Bose and they replaced the entire system.

I'm now getting the same error on my newer system. I do not watch that many movies or listen to that many CDs. It's really disappointing that this system would fail so easily. I watch maybe one movie a month and never play CDs...

    I should've bought a different, less-expensive brand.

SOURCE: Bose System Bose 321 unsupported format with dvd's

You need to stand at the front of a Bose store and tell everyone about to enter your story, until the manager of the store agrees to give you a new one. This looks like an ongoing problem that Bose knows about and will not address. $900+ and maybe 60 hours dvd time and I'm on the same boat. I thought Bose could be a trusted company.

SOURCE: Format unsupported

Format unsupported simply means the unit can not read the disc. The problem is either the disc or the player.

SOURCE: bose lifestyle 48 says format unsupported for audio cds

Hi Johnxxlt,
According to Bose, the message that you have is due to dust in the system ....
They have offered 3 ways :-
Try cleaning the CD or DVD, as follows:

  • Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove stains or fingerprints from the disc surface

  • Wipe in straight movements from the center of the disc to the outside

  • Do not use any chemical cleaning products. They can damage the disc.
If the above will not fix the problem, you need to call them to repair the system.
I know its frustrating, However, we cannot play more with Bose as it might void the warranty if any.
Thanks for using Fixya.

I burned an mp4 on to a disc but will not play on my 321 gsx sbose ystem Says unsupported format I used the nero smart startsmart program and tried to burn as a data and as a video

I check 321 gsx sbose system that you use to play the DVD and it claims that it supports CD-R, CD-RW, SACD, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD, CD, Video CD (NTSC, PAL). So make sure that the DVD that you burn the video onto should be compatible with your DVD player. And you can also refer to this post about burning mp4 with nero to make sure that you burn with right steps.

Not an Audio CD/Format Unsupported

Clean the CD and try again. Also, if DVD displays "not supported", call Bose and ask to recieve an update disc. These updates are released every 6 months. Document your remote control settings before loading the update as they may be erased by the update and will require re-entering settings after the update.
