Are you wanting to disconnect the shift rod from the lower unit?? It just unscrews..
..getting it screwed back in and set to the CORRECT HEIGHT is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT..(if you want to be able to shift and make the lower unit to last!)

get one of these,, its invaluable!!!

SOURCE: how to remove the lower unit on a 35hp Johnson outboard yr 2000.

if you haven't fixed this already, take the pastic water pick up covers off there are two joiner nuts in there undo them, there is a plastic cone on each end take them off and it will slip through. I own the same model and year outboard.

Model 15754M 15 hp evinruide .shift rod housing is holding water. I cleane the drain hole om side of lower case but still holds there a drain hole in shift rod housing that I cant find

There is a rubber seal on the top side of the shift linkage and a gasket under the case. You have to drop the lower unit to repair.

I have a 1989 Evinrude 90 hp V4. Can't figure out how to release the shift rod under the bottom carb. Lower unit is loose and suspended by one bolt. The hairpin cotter key on the shift linkage doesn't move...

The small bolt that holds the shift rod in place has to be removed so the lower unit can be released. Nothing has to be removed from the shift linkage..just remove the shift rod bolt. The lower unit should be ready to be removed.

Removing the lower unit on a 1992 Evinrude short shaft 50 hp

Under Lower Carburetor is a Bolt Going Through The Shift Rod Remove This Bolt--Then Undo All Bolts Holding The Lower Unit--The Lower Unit will Then Come Out Don't Turn The Shift Shaft As It Is Threaded And Will Change The Set Length,If You Do Have To Remove It Then Crew It Fully In Counting The No Of Turns So That You Can Set It Back To The Original Position
