Remove and Install Cartridges
Be sure you have your replacement cartridges handy before you begin. You must install new cartridges immediately after removing the old ones.
Caution:
Do not open ink cartridge packages until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are vacuum packed to maintain reliability.
1.
Turn on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series.
If a cartridge is low or expended, you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen. If a cartridge is expended, you must replace it to be able to print. If a cartridge is low, you can continue printing until the cartridge needs replacement.
If you’re replacing a cartridge before you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen, press Setup, select Maintenance, and press OK. Then select Change Ink Cartridge and press OK.
2.
Open the scanner.
3.
Open the cartridge cover.
4.
Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift the cartridge straight up to remove it. Dispose of it carefully. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refill it.
Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children.
5.
Before opening the new cartridge package, shake it four or five times. (Do not shake a cartridge after opening the package; ink may leak.)
6.
Remove the cartridge from the package, but be careful not to touch the green chip on the cartridge.
7.
Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the cartridge.
Caution:
Do not remove any other labels or seals, or ink will leak.
8.
Insert the new cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place.
9.
Once you replace all the necessary cartridges, close the cartridge cover and push it down until it clicks into place.
10.
Close the scanner.
11.
Press OK to begin charging the ink. This takes about 2 minutes.
When you see a completion message on the LCD display screen, ink charging is finished.
Caution:
Never turn off the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series while ink is charging or you’ll waste ink.
If you see an ink replacement message on the LCD display screen, press OK and press down all the cartridges securely.
If you remove an ink cartridge for later use, protect the ink supply area from dirt and dust and store it in the same environment as the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series with the label facing upward. Note that there is a valve in the ink supply port, making covers or plugs unnecessary, but care is needed to prevent the ink from staining items that the cartridge touches. Do not touch the ink cartridge ink supply port or surrounding area, and do not store the cartridge upside down.
If you remove a low or expended ink cartridge, you cannot reinstall and use the cartridge.
SOURCE: Epson stylus photo R300 cd/dvd tray not set correctly
I had the same problem. Restarted the printer. Reinstalled the drivers. Scratched my head ... nothing! then I moved the printer away from the wall - problem solved! I can't say that this will work for you but if everything else is working, as it was and still is on mine then it's worth a try.
What I didn't realsie was that the cd tray comes out of the back of the printer when it's checking the alignment. I had inadvertantly pushed the printer back, too close to the wall. Moved it forward slightly and it's fixed.
Hope that solves it for everyone.
SOURCE: epson stylus cx8400 cannot recognize ink cartridges
I had the same problem except it would not recognize any of the ink cartridges. I kept hitting the OK button over and over again with the same cartridges in place not removing them at all and it finally recognized them. Decided to go to maintenance on the printer to do a test, and it went right back to not recognizing the cartridges. So i pressed the OK button over and over again until it finally recognized all the cartridges again, but this time i did not try and go into the maintenance to do a test run. Plugged it up to the computer and it has been working ever since. So press the OK button until it recognizes the cartridges, and run no tests on it is what my solution was for the problem. Really is a pain but it works now.
SOURCE: Epson CX8400 ink cartridges run out early
Epson gives you a miserable 12 ml of ink. Then it reports empty when there is still 10-15% of the ink left. I saw someone set up a brand new CX8400, print a single 4x6 photo and it said he was out of cyan. I use reusable cartridges from http://www.ccs-digital.com They hold 20 ml, which is 2/3 more ink. The chips automatically reset to full if you take the cartridge out and put it back in, so you get to use every drop. The ink is in a separate container inside the main cartridge. When it's really empty, you pop out the ink tank and pop in a new one. The tanks are under $3 each. I think this is brilliant because it's like refilling only it avoids the risks and mess of refills.
