Lens error, restart camera

I turn on my camera, and I get an error message stating Lens error, restart camera, the lens is open and will not retract, I have removed the battery and tried to restart. It will not go beyond the lens error message.

Try to unstick the lens by gently pushing it in or pulling it out a little bit. IF that fails, the gears are too misaligned to repair it without opening it.

If you're out of warranty, there are third party place that replace them such as camera lens repairs.

If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay.

SOURCE: Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

SOURCE: Lens error, restart camera

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Lens is stuck and will not retract. Error message states to restart camera. Have taken out batteries, put new ones in and still will not retract.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

The screen reads "lens error, restart camera. I can not get the lens to retract. I can not get the power to stay on. The cannon screen shows up momentairly - but fades to black and the message appears.

remove the battery, let it sit for at least 2 hours, then put it back. put the batteries back, then gentle push the lens sideways to free its stuck part. if the error still occurs and the lens is not retracting, consult the warranty for the device as the lens assembly gears may be at fault.

"Lens error - restart camera" message, but won't restart

I just had the same issue when one of my children drop the camera. I'm not wanting to break anyone's camera but I was able to open the lens cover and pull the lens out and then turning it on it retracted and worked just like it should.
