My 2004 GMC Envoy XUV has the factory radio. It is turned off but has a high pitched noise when the vehicle is first turned on. It does the same when furst turned off. It appears to be sending vehicle diagnositc checks through the radio speakers in the form of static or high pitch hum and sometimes both. Tried to get a new radio installed and vendor stated it was not the radio but a different problem. Please advise.

With that year vehicle it is recommended that you use a special harness because it has an factory amp and in order to get the proper wiring it requires the harness also if you don't use the harness you will loose your onstar and vehicle chimes and warning sounds.

Welcome to the world of gm delco radios. I am a used car dealer in Canada and I deal mostly in trucks and suv's. Honestly I'd say 75% of the radios in Gm's don't work properly, the loading mechanism gets jammed when you try to eject and "check CD" appears. Unfortunately it's not the CD, and to save yourself any further heartbreak, rip the player out and get yourself a good quality Kenwood or the likes.

It is actually coming from the speakers and not the engine compartment. I realize the radio is how the door chime and other things are amplified. This is as if a diagnostic check (that should be silent) that the Envoy does upon starting and shutting the engine down is amplified through the radio speakers. The static is a constant when the radio plays thus is not worth trying to listen too. The high pitch is usually less than 2 minutes upon starting and turning off.
The radio does not just amplify the chimes - it creates them. All vehicle health checks are made by the ECM and BCM digitally accessing memory locations in the various computers (and the radio) via the data link, and eventually turning on the IPC MIL light if the error is serious. A good first check is to look for error codes using a code reader.
It is possible that the radio antenna is picking up the datalink signals (crosstalk) and that is what you are hearing - disconnect the antenna at the back of the radio and see if the noise continues. If it does, the crosstalk is in the radio itself (a failure inside it); otherwise an antenna repair is in order.
