I have hp pavilion dv6226us and when booted up the screen stays dark. You can see display only if you shine a light onto the screen. I tried to turn up the brightness and did't have any luck. Same thing and about 3 months past warranty end (of course). Yesterday I noticed the screen flickering a bit. Later, I went to use the laptop and the screen was very, very dark. I can barely make things out if a bright light is shined on the monitor. I've plugged an external monitor into the laptop and it works.

Pavilion g7-1173dx possible screen inverter issue?

The inverter is almost always below the screen in the bezel. You should only need a plastic pry bar (cost about $3) and you pop the bezel off from the screen side usually, you may need to check for screws under any rubber stops on the screen too. After the bezel is off the inverter should be on the bottom with two plugs into it. Unplug, pull it out and swap.

well as i see from your problem explanation i believe that the LED which are at the backside of your LCD screen is not working so its better to troubleshoot from that angle.

No display on screen

It's either the backlight lamp or screen inverter is busted. Here's how to determine which is which:
  1. Grab a flashlight.
  2. Boot up.
  3. Shine the flashlight onto the screen.
  4. If you cannot see any display even a faint one, the screen inverter is dead, else the backlight lamps are busted.
  5. Replace which ever is the culprit.

Monitor goes on then off right away.

The backlight inverter is faulty.
THis means that there is either a loose contact or one of the transistors on the backlight inverter has blown

Display went dark

The backlighting is provided via the LCD inverter as you described.

My toshiba screen

Shine a torch light onto the screen. If you can see a faint outline of the images, it could indicate a back light failure. Unfortunately, you cannot fix this by yourself. You will need to take it for servicing.

The VGA card or the VGA driver is not properly installed, perhaps.Try reinstalling the driver.
If you suspect the monitor brightness controls then try fiddling with them untill the brightness is good enough.
Check monitor cable also(VGA).

Display problem

When the screen goes dark shine a flashlight in the lower right hand corner where the Start button typically is located. If you can see faint images then you have a backlight problem. If you don't see anything then try connecting a spare monitor in its place. If that works then you have some other type of problem involving your LCD monitor. In both cases unless you have the experience and tools to safely work on fairly delicate electronics this is not a repair job for the typical consumer.
