You are thinking of starting the laptop in different modes. F8 will start up with a different start up menu if you are using Windows. F5 will, on older Windows Versions start in DOS mode.
This sounds like you may have a faulty RAM module. Often times when one or both sticks of RAM in a system go bad it will prevent the system from fully coming up. In order to test if this is the issue, follow the below instructions and as always if you do not feel comfortable working with this stuff you should consult a local technician for assistance.
Remove power cable and battery from system. Ensure the system is completely turned off.
Flip the system upside down and remove the RAM compartment door. See graphic below.
3.If you have two sticks of RAM in your system, you should remove one and try to boot the system. If the same issue occurs, swap out the sticks and try again.
If the issue remains, Toshiba has an alert on their website about updating your BIOS firmware. Fill out the appropriate sections on the Toshiba support website for your model for more details. Comment back if you would like further assistance.
Usually these buttons only operate when the Toshiba software is fully installed. Check whether you do have the Toshiba Initial CD and try installing all there programms in terms of media .
