Video footage will not play on computer.

Using the video capture setting, I've recorded various shot videos in the past with no problems. Two days ago I found it necessary to shoot longer footage. Several films were only 2 minutes or less. When transferred to my computer, they played perfectly on every player I have (winamp, Windows Media, etc.) However, then I shot two films which were so long that they filled the entire SD cards. One of these films were shot on the same card as the other films which do work. Another card was reserved for another film, all by itself. Both cards were 2gb, allowing the films to last in excess of 10 minutes. These two films would play on the camera, but will not play on my computer. Opening them, windows media says it cannot recognize the codec used to compress them. Winamp and VLC media player give no explanations at all. Has anyone else experienced anything like this and found a solution? These films were long because they are very important, and I need to resolve this quickly.

DRIVER WIN 7

The USB streaming driver for the Camcorder is not available for Windows 7 OS from Sony at this point. Hence it is not possible to transfer videos using USB interface. You may use i.LINK or A/V interface to transfer videos from the Camcorder to the Computer which is running on Windows 7 Operating System.

Please follow the steps to transfer video to a computer using an i.LINK connection (IEEE 1394).

IMPORTANT: Video capture software and a compatible video capture card must be installed on the computer. Depending on the computer manufacturer, various video capture cards and software (Adobe Premiere, Roxio Video Wave, Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, etc.) may be available or already installed on your computer. If necessary, contact the manufacturer of your computer for further information.

NOTE: Many Sony VAIO computers are bundled with Sony DVgate Motion or DVgate Plus software for video capturing. Some VAIO computers also include Click To DVD software that will allow video capture to the computer hard drive or directly to a DVD.

  1. Connect an i.LINK cable (also known as IEEE 1394) to the i.LINK port on the digital camcorder.

  1. Connect the other end of the i.LINK cable to the computer.

NOTE: The computer i.LINK ports and capture cards may have either 4-pin or 6-pin connections. Sony digital camcorders use i.LINK ports with 4 pins. If your computer only has a 6-pin i.LINK port, then it will be necessary to use a 4-pin to 6-pin i.LINK cable.

  1. Turn on the digital camcorder by moving the POWER switch to the VTR position.
  2. Cue the camcorder tape to the beginning of the video footage.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Start the video capture software on the computer.
  5. Begin playing the recorded video in the camcorder.
  6. Begin importing the video with the capture software.

It should now be possible to copy the video using the video capture software if the computer hardware and software are configured correctly.

How do you transfer video VHS to DVD?

I'm glad to provide the instructions to transfer video from VHS Tape to DVD. You may purchase a DVD Recorder and connect the VCR to its A/V input to record the videos directly to a DVD. There are VCR/DVD Combo Recorders available where you can dub from VHS to DVD without using another VCR.

Alternately, if you have an A/V interface in your Computer, you can connect a VCR to the Computer and capture videos using Windows Movie Maker or any other video capture software. Once you transfer the video to the computer, you can burn the videos to a DVD using the DVD burner in the Computer.

Thanks for understanding. Please let me know if you require further assistance or any clarifications.

I am trying to digitize HDV footage using fcp 6.0.6 on an Intel imac with 2gb ram. Trying desperately to get my computer to recognize the Vixia HV 30 camera, but it will not. I have tried changing...

First, confirm what type of video is being output from the camera as HDV cameras can also ouput DV or can Downconvert HDV footage form the camera to DV even if the settings for recording were HDV.
The message is to double check and understand the menu settings within the camera.

Once done FCP will require an Easy Setup that matches the camera output.
If you shot and are indeed outputting HDV, start off with Easy Setup>HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec1080i60, assuming you a an NTSC user.

Make sure the properties for the project you start after the ingest match the frame rate you used to record. Reads like 29.97 speed setting looking at images recorded at 24f.

Putting video footage on my computer

To get your footage into the computer from DV tape you need a four pin firewire (IEEE1493 or iLink) cable from the camera to a six pin cable into the computer. USB will not do a proper job, it's for downloding photos or as you already mentioned, Web caming.
