Battery dies right away

Hello, My Canon Speedlite 580 dies right away even after i put in new batteries. It does fire a few shots but then doesn't even turn on. Does it eat up that much energy, or something wrong with it? How many shots should you be able get with newly charged rechargeable batteries? Thanks

Thank you for your post! Yes, I later heard that rechargeable batteries aren't always good becuase the contacts are not as good...? What are "digitally" rated alkalines??

You might want to try NON rechargeable batteries, particularly "digitally" rated alkalines. If this won't do it, I'd take it to get looked at.

SOME rechargeable batteries have flat ends-these are designed to be welded into packs. "Consumer top" batteries have the usual button on the positive end and should otherwise work fine. Depends on what kind of rechargeable batteries you use, however; nickel-metal-hydride (NIMH) are better for high drain applications than nickel-cadmium (NiCD) ones. "Digital" alkalines produce more power than regular ones and are recommended for high-drain applications.

I mentioned trying non-rechargeable batteries to eliminate one possibility: That the batteries or charger were bad.

More info needed: Will the flash fire when you push the test button? Have you rest the camera you're using to factory defaults while the flash is mounted on the camera and turned on?

My canon 580 EX II stops firing even with new batteries

You must disable the 580EX II form using the 4AA.

4AA must be needed when using hv power pack.

Just let the 4AA use & display the LCD panel.

Cannon Speedlite 270EX doesn't turn on and I put new batteries in

Try cleaning out the contacts where the batteries touch. Make sure the battery door is completely flush with the body and see if you've inserted everything correctly. The type of battery you use also effects the flash recycle time and how it operates too. Have you tried using different types of batteries? Try using NI-MH instead of Alkaline and see if the speedlite will power. There's a test button on the flash and also an off-on switch you can try toggling around. The flash itself is very simple so if it still won't power on after all of that, you should contact customer support.

I have a canon 40D and a speedlite 580 second sync not working

If you are not in P, AV, TV or M then the camera will not allow that feature. The picture modes disable many higher, more sophistocated features.

I purchased a new Canon 580 EX II in July and have used it for 9 weddings, it has been in the Canon shop once, they stated no problems, but the Flash HAS NEVER WORKED RIGHT! It drains the batteries in...

Trust me I have this flash and I LOVE IT, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Sounds like you have a short somewhere, where did you buy it? Remember Canon gives you a full one year warranty BUT it must be the Canon USA and not Japan model....THAT is where it hurts! Read the fine print, it may be cheaper but that does not mean it will be better.

Even if you have lost your receipt Canon will have you on file, because you registered your Canon product, right??

If you need it fixed, I have the guy for you, but I am located in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am sure you can call him on the phone and he can see if it's worth you having it shipped.

But FIRST CALL CANON they are awesome, and want you happy! And only buy B&H Photo.com they are amazing and NO SALES TAX for online

Keep us posted!

It wont power up at all. I have tried batteries,

1 - Check the battery contact and make sure the batteries in the flash are good.
2 - check the plug for the turbo, make sure it is not damaged, as well as, the high voltage plug on the 580 flash. If those contacts look dirty or mushroom shaped, you will nee the flash repaired.
3 - obviously make sure the turbo is charged
