My heater started making very loud whirring noises tonight. I quickly shut it off, and once the burners went out, the noise stopped (blower was still going). I waited a few minutes and turned it back on. Once the burners started going, the noise was back but was intermittent. Dad thought it was a belt slipping? Any ideas? I can't run it due to the noise, and it's cold tonight, so any help would be appreciated!!
Check the draft inducer motor for any partial blockages or dibri.
I've seen sticks, birds nest particles and pieces of deteriorating fan blades (squirrel cage type fans) cause this.
You might also find that the inducer motors bearing are going.
If its a loud vibrating grinding type noise, I'd suspect bearings or missing pieces of the blades. (unbalanced)
If it's a clanking type noise I'd suspect loose items hitting the fan.
The inducer motor will only operate right before and during burner operation, while the blower motor can operate at any time depending on your setting.

I called a guy out and he initially thought it was the bearings going bad, but he was baffled because when he first turned the unit back (it had been off for 12 hours) it made the noise, but he kept running it and the noise never came back. So for now, there's nothing to do. He told me to take note of the noise and when it happens. Thanks!!
The noise was a loud clanking noise and I was told that inducer motor squirrel cage was loose. At first he thought there was debris but he did not confirm that. He went to his truck and came back with a screw. Put it all back together and left. Five hours later the noise started again. It is late at night and no one will come until morning. In speaking with another company I was told that the squirrel cage cannot be repaired but must be replace. Any information? Thanks. My unit is hot air gas furnese - a Trane.
I have a new carrier infinity furnace, just 8 weeks old. I have had the service man here 4 times, because the exhaust fan had such a loud whirring noise. When the exhaust fan shuts down, (and the blower fan is still running), the noise stops. The service man has changed the exhaust fan already, but does not know what the problem is. It is the most annoying sound and it carries right up to the second floor. Anyone know any answers, other than getting yet another new furnace???
