How do I repair my calculator?

The only repairs that can be done is the replacement of the batteries. Any other repairs will be simply too expensive considering these are hand units. At one time I made a good living repairing calculators but as the replacement cost went through the floor so did my job out the door.

Does not turn on after long period of non use...new batteries are in, and I have done reset

Adjust the contrast of the screen. If screen is too dim you may not be aware that the calculator is ON.
To adjust screen contrast:
Press and HOLD the [ON] key
Press [+] to darken the screen or [-] to lighten it.

If that fails to revive the calculator, here are some diagnostics you can perform before declaring the machine fit for repairs.

Warning
In the keyboard test (below), make sure the keys are pressed in the right order. If the calculator fails the keyboard test then it needs repairs. (Ignore the beginning of the post and skip to the last part For Repairs )

You can reset the calculator:

Turn the back of the calculator towards you. Extract the top left rubber pad on the back of the calculator and use a paper clip to press the Reset button. If that does not restore the calculator to health, you should perform the diagnostic tests.

Make the calculator perform a
Self test.
  1. Turn calculator on
  2. Press and HOLD the key [ON]
  3. Press and release the key with "E" to its right (the one before last in first row)
  4. Release the [ON] key.
It tests the RAM and ROM. You will see various patterns on screen. Afterward you should see
IROM OK,
IRAM OK,
HP48GX OK
The self test will continue repeatedly until you perform a
System Halt
  1. Press and HOLD the [ON] key
  2. Press and release the "C" key
  3. Release the [ON] key.
The empty stack should appear.

If you do not see IROM OK and IRAM OK, the calculator requires service.

If the above procedure is successful, you may want
to test the keyboard.
  1. Turn calculator on
  2. Press and HOLD the [ON] key
  3. Press and release the "D" key.
  4. Release the [ON] key
  5. Press and release the "E" key. KBD 1 should appear on the top left corner of the screen.
  6. Starting at the upper left corner of the keyboard, and moving Left to right, press every key in sequence. If you follow the sequence and the keys are functioning properly you should hear a high pitch sound at each press.
  7. If everything is OK, when you press the last key (+) the screen displays KBD 1 OK.
To exit the keyboard test proceed as described above under System Halt.

If you follow the proper sequence and a hexadecimal number appears after pressing a key, the calculator requires service.-

My HP 15C calculator recently developed a problem with the number pad being unresponsive. Calculator appears to pass the self test, however, the key pad test does not work at all. Suggestions for repair?

If the keyboard test fails the calculator should be sent for repairs. One shop in Pennsylvania repairs most models, except the newer ones. The URL is www.fixthatcalc.com. Best of luck!

The buttons on my calculator will not work

Hello,
Back to the original problem. Would it not be a good idea to have the calculator repaired, if cost of repairs is significantly less than the price of a new one? But then, what do I know?
