I have a kenmore gas range. It used to make a loud boom sound when it was starting to preheat. Now it won't heat at all, it will be in preheat mode for hours (when set for 350F) and never hit 350. there is a noticable odor as well. when you look in the oven there is an orange light on, I assume it is the flame. any ideas what is going on?

greg, sounds like your needle valve is not seated. Remove the bottom drawer. Look back to the base of the burner where the shutter air adjustment is. Right under there is the valve which should have a 1/2 inch or 7/16 nut. (I Forgot what size). Turn this nut clockwise until the flame is adjusted to the correct size, should be a nice blue flame. The nut maybe hard to turn because you are seating the needle. Catriver..post back
SOURCE: Preheat taking long time
If your oven has the hidden bake element then it is probably working properly. A standard oven with an exposed bake element will usually take about 12-15 minutes to preheat. The hidden element models take a little longer but they usually heat a little more evenly.
Post back if you have any more questions.
SOURCE: preheat issue with a new kenmore electric range
some of the newer ranges only pre-heat using one element. this gives them a better energy saving rating

I did all this and the flames are still huge inside the oven...

The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. There is a video at http://appliancehelponline.com/gasoventroubleshootvideo.html this will walk you thru the correct procedure for performing this test. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

To explain further, I turn on the oven to 350 and leave the door open slightly. you never hear that little poof of it turning on. You smell an odor that I assumed was gas, but not sure. The last time I tried to use it it was preheating for 2 hours I think and never got more than warm. when you stick your hand in the oven you don't feel the heat like you should, it is only a slight warm. I put a frozen food in for those 2 hours the other night, French fries, and after 2 hours in the oven they still were cold to the touch. That shows how not hot the oven was. i do see an orange light down on the right side of the oven, I always assumed that was it lighting, but obviously not. weird thing is, a few years ago the one burner on top of the stove started to not work as well as it should, you put it on high and it looks like it is on low, and it takes longer thanit should to boil things so we use the other burners for boiling and bigger jobs. could one have something to do with the other? could there be a leak in the gas line? or does it sound like a part went bad?
