This problem is not depending on a kind of LED or bulb. The reason is that the display is a VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) with no additional illumination.
The most common problem with VFD is, that the heater of the VFD is going bad. You can't change it because it is built-in. For experienced repairman it is possible to higher the heater voltage or the anode supply to gain the brightness a bit. But thats a tricky thing.
Sometimes it may help to clean the display cover from inside. This is what you can do first. The reason for getting dark by dust inside the cover is that the VFD is working with a anode voltage wich is a bit higher (about 30V - 50V). This sucks the very fine dust electrostatically into the casing.
To clean up the protective display cover from inside, remove the casing and also the cover in front of the VFD and clean the dsplay protection cover (the VFD istself is usually clean). Maybe that's it - but maybe not (that means the VFD is going bad).
