Shuts itself off but lens won't retract

Tried new batteries but can only take 5 photos and screen goes black and lens stays out. I don't know if it's on or off. Press button and nothing happens!

Thanks....I've been using the SD card for a few months and I cleared it, so that should be OK...but...I can't do anything with the camera because the screen stays dark...won"t start (or stop....don't know if it's still on or not)..nothing happens when I press anything! The lens remains out.

I've tried 3 changes of batteries and that works...for 5 times only, then it does the same thing!

    Very frustrating!

NOTHING will show up on the screen! It goes on for about 3 seconds and then right off AND DARK AGAIN....so there is no way I can get to see menu or anything!

THANKS FOR TRYING....I LIKE THE "THROW IT AGAINST THE WALL" IDEA!!!!

Have you initialized the SD card? Go to the set-up menu and initialize the card. Also check for a timed-shut-off option.

Remove and re-insert the batteries (polarity OK?) Remove the card. Go to the set-up menu, usually accessed through a dial and select "OK" button in the center. There are several menus built into the camera, which should show up on the screen.
If you can see a menu, scroll through the selections. The camera is either timing itself out to save batteries, or going into some undesirable mode. My Nikon Coolpix does the same.
Try to restore default settings. Power down, remove and re-insert the batteries, insert the card and restart,
Are you using photo-grade batteries and not CVS alkaline?

That's frustrating as hell. I would have either returned the camera under warrantee or thrown it against the wall. The problem is, the repair costs more than a new and hopefully better camera. Stumped on this one. My Nikon requires me to remove and replace the batteries to clear the camera. When I reinsert batteries and reinsert the card, it works OK.

How do i take a photo with the cannon if the screen is black

Try the following steps when the lens is stuck and will not open, retract, or extend.
  1. Turn the power off, eject the battery pack, and reinsert it into the camera.
  2. Turn the power back on and check if the drive part of the lens moves properly.
  3. If the lens still will not open, retract or extend, then reset the camera.

Viewfinder and LED display both black.

Try pressing the power ON and when the lens has retracted, remove the batteries. Wait a few minutes. Press the power ON again. Now replace the batteries and try the camera again.

Canon Powershot SI screen goes black after taking a photo

That sounds like a sticky lens shutter. They usually have to be replaced, as they usually will need parts. When the camera is working look inside the lens and take a picture(with flash turned off). You should see a black shutter door clicking shut in the lens. When the camera acts up, look inside the lens again. If the door is staying shut full time, that is your problem.

Polaroid i735 Camera won't turn on. Lens stuck.

I had the same problem, and fixed it by wiggling the lens a little, when turning it on.
After a few tries, it finally wiggled free, and the lens retracted.

Are you using lithium batteries?

All Kodak cameras seem to have issues with alkaline batteries.

Although lithiums cost more, they work well and provide better value and performance than alkaline batteries.
