Hi, I just described this problem and FixYa threw me back to a sign in page. This is frustrating to not only have problem with phone but where I supposedly can go for help.
I cannot determine if the charge problem is with the phones or with the charging base. The main base seems to work but the extra charger doesn't seem to be. Is there some way I can test the phone batteries to determine if they need new ones? I have unplugged the system several times and that seems to help for less than a day.
Thank you in advance.

If phone is more than 1 yr. old, battery needs to be replaced, if not reset base by disconnecting power, pressing and holding delete key while reconnecting power.

Try a new battery. That is usually what "88" means.

Take the cradle for the waterproof phone and plug it into the outlet close to the answering machine base. Hold the waterproof phone in one hand, with the other press the "menu" button, press up to the "register phone", then press "menu" again. The answering machine base should say "registering phone". Once it does press the "#" key on the waterproof phone and it should say registering phone. When they beep the waterproof phone should be working. The reset instructions in the owners manual may work if you move the WP phone and cradle close to the base. I stumbled onto this method after reading about a newer model. As i took the WP phone downstairs the # key would activate the registering feature but would when I walked back upstairs. So i figured Id take both downstairs and BAMMM, it worked. Good Luck all! BTW mine came with a battery, and uniden probably hasnt figured this out either.

Check the line comming into the main handset base. Make sure it is not cracked or your cat hasn't chewed through it.LOL This sounds like the most likley solution. Try hooking the main phone line to an ordinary old fashioned touch tone phone with a wired handset and if that is working then the problem lies in the main base of your new phone. It could be as simple as reprogramming the base.

Your phones have the charger built into them and that is what has gone bad. After a while the dealt-V sensing unit dies and the phone overcharges the battery. You will notice your batteries heat up when charged then your delta-V sensing circuit is probably shot.
Personal Note: I think home phone manufacturers are using old non-lipo technology because it has these faults and you will have to get a new phone after some time. Also.... Why aren't home phones half as cool as cell phones??? Hmmmm.... Yeah I want my home phone to get, wifi, contact sync, usb connection, color screen, multi-ring, infinate contact storage, calendar, timer, and all the other bs in a cell phone. At least contact sync through USB, come on. Or even a shared phonebook for all phones right.

How do I know if anyone is even answering my question? This seems to be a very difficult site to try and find a solution.
