Unit just shut off while driving (it was plugged in) and displayed "software missing" error. Now won't reset or respond to power switch.

I too just received the nuvi 260 as a gift and was trying to register it online to mygarmin. It now will only show system software missing and I tried to go online and download it again through the garmin site and it said the file was corrupt.

I updated mine with Webupdater. I emailed tech support about some problems I was already having with it. They told me about WebUpdater and that would fix my problem. I did exactly what they asked and now it wont even turn on. Its stops at the Garmin screen and says "System Software Missing". I travel for a living and rely on GPS so I dont have to use print off's or maps. I have had nothing but problems with my Garmin and should have bought a TomTom. So much for research.

Same problem, but probably my fault. Everything was working great. Updated to v5.0 and updated all english voices and xml file. Then exited software and unplugged unit from computer. Unit beeped and started it's boot sequence & I held the power button to turn it off since I wasn't sure if all the new software would take without power cycling. When I turned it back on I got the :SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING" message. Tried the webupdater again but now it says the update file is corrupt. It must mean the file on the Nuvi260W is corrupt but I don't know how to delte it and fix it.

Current version of software is 5.0
Download that as that may be your problem.
You must download the newest version of WebUpdater from Garmin for free to your computer.

I want to update my garmin 260w with free updates on the maps. My unit is 2yrs old.

Garmin provides free updates through their website for the first 60 days after a new unit is put into service. After that, you'll have to purchase map updates. (Software updates are free, though.)

That said, you should first point your browser to www.Garmin.com and go through the process of downloading and installing their browser extension. You might have to reboot your computer or restart your browser to finish the installation.

Return to Garmin.com and register your nuvi. At some point, it will ask you to connect your nuvi to the computer via the USB cable. Do so. Your computer will also go through the process of installing the drivers necessary to view the nuvi as a storage device (so you can download photos and the like).

Once everything is up, the browser extension will tell you what the status is of your nuvi and of its maps. If you're entitled to a free map update, it will allow you to do so. If you're due for a software update, you can do that, also.

Now have letters missing and some are duplicated.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} If a nuvi 200 is has an older version of system software a certain glitch may occur. The device may be missing letters or have jumbled letters or displaying duplicate letters or strange symbols on the address screen. To correct this you will need to update the system software of your nuvi. You can easily do this by using Garmin's WebUpdater program:
  1. Click the following link to download the WebUpdater program: http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
  2. Follow the on screen prompts from the website
  3. Choose RUN/OPEN
  4. Follow the on screen prompts
After the program has been installed it should run automatically. If it does not please use the steps below.
To run WebUpdater:
  1. From the Start menu, click All Programs and find the Garmin folder
  2. Click WebUpdater
  3. Connect your nuvi to an available USB port on your computer
  4. To search for an available update, choose NEXT
  5. As the program automatically finds updates, choose NEXT to load the update. Once the update is complete, you can search for other updates such as voice languages, Bluetooth, and Traffic Receiver.
  6. Disconnect the unit to ensure it powers on.
Take your unit outdoors and keep it in a stationary position with an open sky view until it reacquires satellites.

Describe your Garmin nuvi® 260W Car GPS Receiver Problem. System Software Missing. I get a message on computer that it is ready to use but Garmin does not show up on any of the drives.

I contacted Garmin and they had me disconnect my unit from the computer and down load the updater again. The down load shows up with two files the updater and another one . I had to drag them to my desktop and then drag the one file onto the updater and then plug in my unit and start the updater.

Garmin nuvi system software missing 265W i try to update my garmin nuvi 260. I see on the screen: sytem software missing. I cannot do anything else. Please, help!

I can help you reset and fix your Garmin Nuvi 265W.

Getting stuck on the flashing Garmin logo, or a message about not finding any maps, are indications that the firmware / system software inside your GPS has been corrupted.

There are three steps to take to get your Nuvi 265W running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

System software missing

BEFORE you connect the Garmin to your computer you must download the free Garmin program on your computer called UPDATER. Did you do that?

If not:
