SOURCE: lens error message Canon Powershot A550

Canon A550 and A560 have the same body and most of the internal parts, including lens assembly are the same. Canon won't sell individual parts within the lens assembly. There could be two possiblities. One is (unlikely) that the lens assembly components have been knocked off from their position. The other is that because of a knock, or dropping the camera, the gears in the gearbox of the lens assembly are broken. These gears are the same as the ones in A530/A540, and are available from ebay for $12.50 including shipping. Checkout my site for how to open up the camera and the lens assembly to replace these:

http://pkrobot.freehostia.com/MiscElectronics2.htm

For A550 and A560, if you take it to the professional repair shop, it might not be cost effective, since it might cost around $90. Canon does not sell gears, so they might have to replace the entire lens assembly. The new camera is available these days for around $140.

SOURCE: lens error restart camera but

Hi

Your lens is defective needs to be cleaned, repaired or replaced. If you got sand in the gears it will definitely jam up the lens! Sometimes you can tear down the lens and clean out the sand, and if none of the gears are damaged the lens will then work properly again.

There are online places that will do it for a decent price and there are others that overcharge by way too much.

I know this because I OWN ONE that charges a reasonable price to do the repair! (Google 'darntoothysam')

Just let us know if we can help! Good luck from

SOURCE: Lens error, restart camera

Sir,
The problem seems that miniscule dust/sand particles jam the gears which moves the lens.
It is possible to turn the lens motor by hand bit by bit and remove particles stuck in the gear.

Also try restoring the factory settings and resetting the camera and seeing if that makes the error to go away. To do that, hold down the Menu button for five seconds. This should reset everything and (hopefully) make the error stop. If it doesn't, then you've got a separate problem-- come back and let us know if the error is still there. Also, if you have photos stored on the camera's internal memory, resetting the camera will delete those so make sure to download them first.
Thanks
Good luck!

My Canon PowerShot SD850 IS has a lens that is stuck in the extended position. I get a screen that says lens error, restart camera, but when I try to connect to the software, I get a screen on the computer...

Don't play around with that lens, you can do more damage to the camera and focus with some of the stuff people tell you to try. Your camera just needs to be serviced and you'll be working great again. The shop that specializes in service for the powershots is: camerasandparts.com They're amazing if you need a hand with one of these, that's all they deal with. They have your exact SD850 Lens Error, Restart Camera problem on their site. Good luck, they're the place for help with a powershot, best of luck with it.

My SD850 Canon says Lens Error restart camera. I have tried to turn it on/off numerous times taken out the battery and sd card. Is there anything else I can try

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Lens will not close

Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.
