Red light then blue light from the side panel but nothing comes on
A remote is not needed. You have an issue with your set.

I got the 42" Polaroid HDTV from Walmart (on Black Friday) and was able to link it to my Tivo remote using the Mitsubishi setting and code 0001.

I use it to Power On/Off and Volume control.

It can be the main board or the power supply,
look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.
